—Xiaolong Li, Indiana State University

“I have been teaching introductory programming courses since 1975, and programming in the C language since 1986. In the beginning there were no good textbooks on C—in fact, there weren’t any! When Deitel, C How to Program, 1/e [the textbook first version of this book], came out, we jumped on it—it was at the time clearly the best text on C. The new edition continues a tradition—it’s by far the best student-oriented textbook on programming in the C language—the Deitels have set the standard—again! A thorough, careful, student-oriented treatment of not just the language, but more importantly, the ideas, concepts and techniques of programming! ‘Live code’ is also a big plus, encouraging active participation by the reader. A great book!”

—Richard Albright, Goldey-Beacom College

“I like the quality of the writing; it’s polished, well-structured, touches important topics and outlines common mistakes really well. Nice visualization of binary search. The card shuffling example illustrates a solution to the problem with great coding and explanation. Nice example on signal handling.”

—Vytautus Leonavicius, Microsoft

“The control statements chapters are excellent. Great coverage of functions. The strings and characters discussion is easy to follow. The writing in the ‘Structures, Unions, Bit Manipulation and Enumerations’ chapter is very clear. The ‘Data Structures’ chapter is well written and the examples are great. The ‘Other Topics’ chapter does a good job closing the coverage of the C language with all those ‘little things.’”

—José Antonio González Seco, Parliament of Andalusia, Spain

“Clearly demonstrates important C programming concepts. The introductory chapters are very good. The examples in the ‘Functions’ chapter were good. Just the right amount of coverage of arrays. The C Pointers chapter is well-written; the coverage is quite detailed. Excellent discussion of many of the string functions. Fine chapters on formatted input/output and files. Good introduction to data structures. I was pleased to see a hint at Big O running time in the binary search example. Good information in the preprocessor chapter.”

—Dr. John F. Doyle, Indiana University Southeast

“The Deitel book easily provides the clearest and most in-depth approach to standard C programming. With the Deitel C book, readers have a tremendous resource that will enable them to succeed in the professional workplace for years to come.”

—William Smith, Tulsa Community College

“Covers material that will be useful the job market.”

—Fred J. Tydeman, Tydeman Consulting, Vice-Chair of J11 (ANSI C)

About as good a book for a thorough review of C as I've seen
By Tom Betka
When I purchased this text, I hadn't done much serious C programming in a while. But since I knew the C language, I really didn't want to have to read through monotonous beginner programming materials. Since I have several other products published by Deitel & Associates, I suspected that the quality of this text would be good--and after taking a few minutes to search inside the book (a GREAT feature here on Amazon, by the way), my suspicion was confirmed and I purchased both the physical book and the electronic version. I then worked through the book over a period of about month, doing each and every code example--and then changing them, breaking them, fixing them, adding features to them, and whatever else I could think of to really get inside the material. By the end of the text I found that I have a MUCH better understanding of the C language, and feel very comfortable using it in my everyday coding endeavours. I definitely "know what I don't know" at this point, and thus find it much easier to get to the next level of C programming. And although I found a few small and relatively minor errata, I did not find the electronic version to be missing portions of code--so I cannot reproduce what Mr. Moore (another reviewer here) found 10 months prior to my review. So my suspicion is that the authors have taken the information from his review and simply fixed the electronic version of the text.

As I spent quite a bit of time going through this text and plan to use it heavily (mainly in the world of critical embedded systems development), I paid particular attention to the "Secure C Programming" sections at the end of most of the chapters. Although brief, I found these sections to be quite invaluable. I can understand how some people would like to see more material here, but there is so much to cover that I think the text would grow unnecessarily long if it were to be expanded much. Instead, I prefer the more brief description of potential issues, with references made to where I can go to find more information. In fact I used many (if not all) of these references, and found them to be extremely valuable. I also found the book to do a very good job at following the basic principles consistent with the MISRA guidelines, as well as the JPL coding standards. Any serious embedded systems developer (and I would argue any serious C developer) should be very familiar with most of these standards--because the industry you'll be working in seems to be extremely serious about them. Just Google for the recent (fall 2013) result of the Toyota Camry unintended acceleration suits and the firmware-related issues that came to light therein, to get a flavour of just how important these types of standards can be. So the concept of secure C programming is in fact very important, and one of the features I liked most about this book.

In the end, I found this book to be one of the best I've seen on the subject of a review of the C language for established programmers. If you are looking for a "hold-my-hand" guide to programming in the C language, then this book is probably not for you. Perhaps in that case you should check out one of the many beginning programming texts using the C language. However if, like me, you learned and used the C language in the past but hadn't done much with it for a few years, then this book is an excellent choice. It's relatively inexpensive, and it's quite easy to cover a chapter every 1-2 days...even doing all the code examples. I should mention that some might criticize the book for not having *enough* code examples, and that might be a legitimate complaint. However if you are an experienced programmer (the audience this book is intended for), then do you really need that many programming examples? I would argue that in fact you don't--and all that you really need is a thorough explanation of the syntax and logic of using the C language and the standard library functions, with a heavy emphasis on SAFETY in using these features. And in fact, this is exactly what this text does.

So in summary, this book has quickly become one of my favorite programming texts. It is brief, thorough on the important matters, and very relevant to my field of using C for safety-critical embedded systems. Most of all it gives me relative references that I can use to enhance my learning in the future. So for the price, I would highly recommend people consider this book.

Too much fluff
By David Li
As a long-time Python programmer seeing to move to lower-level work, I thought this book "for programmers" would be perfect. Unfortunately, this is barely above the level of an introductory book - there is simply too much fluff and unnecessary reference material. The book wastes a lot of time explaining irrelevant things like what Linux is, how to run a C program, and how to use if statements. I would rather have seen a more thorough discussion of topics important to C as an imperative language, like pointers - essentially, what I wanted was a quick runthrough of the language along with detailed discussion of best practices and idioms.

This book has some strong suits - the secure programming section at the end of each chapter was interesting, though short, and the C11 material was interesting (though it also felt tacked-on in order to give the book a more impressive title).

Overall this book gets the job done, but you are not getting your money's worth.

Another great text from Deitel and Deitel
By J Batey
When you are looking to learn a new technology (or very old in this case, but still one of the best) the Deitel Developer series is nearly guaranteed to teach it effectively. I am a STEM educator, so I am picky about how things are taught and scaffolded and this book was great at cleary communicating how C works - it does not merely give an example to copy and paste and then move on. The authors clearly know their content and explain every example in great detail. I would also HIGHLY recommend their Java for Programmers edition with 7 se included - another great buy.

Letters from a Stoic (Penguin Classics), by Lucius Annaeus Seneca

"It is philosophy that has the duty of protecting us...without it no one can lead a life free of fear or worry."

For several years of his turbulent life, Seneca was the guiding hand of the Roman Empire. His inspired reasoning derived mainly from the Stoic principles, which had originally been developed some centuries earlier in Athens. This selection of Seneca's letters shows him upholding the austere ethical ideals of Stoicism—the wisdom of the self-possessed person immune to overmastering emotions and life’s setbacks—while valuing friendship and the courage of ordinary men, and criticizing the harsh treatment  of slaves and the cruelties in the gladiatorial arena. The humanity and wit revealed in Seneca’s interpretation of Stoicism is a moving and inspiring declaration of the dignity of the individual mind.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Common Sense, Roman Decadence, and the Meaning of Life
By jroszak@kqed.org
The first time I read this book I was amazed and excited, and entering middle age. Seneca's thoughts on the human condition seemed like they could have been written today. Except for some dated Roman references, here is a man trying to define how to live, in what we today would call "the secular society." The series of letters reads like a personal guidebook to ethics. It still speaks to us across the centuries. Seneca was priveleged, ego centric, and all too aware of the fleeting nature of life. He was also a tutor of Nero, a dramatist, philosopher, slave owner, etc. But his essay-like letters - by turns glib and medatative - reveal a man struggling to make sense of a world of power, wealth and abundance, oestensibly ruled by reason, suffused with uncertainty and enveloped in paganism. He was also no doubt polishing his image for future generations. Nonetheless, he talks of god and spirituality, and the early Christians were said to have valued his wisdom. I've read this two or three times. Each time I've given it away to a friend. Once you read it, you'll go back to it again and again. His maxims are famous. His commonsense advice still rings true.

Stoicism - - a modern philosophy
By Martin H. Dickinson
Stoicism has been much misunderstood, and the adjective "stoic," which loosely can be taken to mean bearing up under duress, is partly correct but does not do justice to one of the world's great philosophies. This Penguin volume presents a great selection from the letters of Seneca, which hits all the high points of the philosophy and captures Seneca's remarkable personality, which has made him a hit with the cognoscenti for 2,000 years. Few perhaps realize that the Stoics postulated a great commonwealth governed by law, or that they idealized democracy. Seneca mentions Solon the lawgiver as the creator of democracy and refers numerous times to the Roman Stoic saint, Cato, who strove mightily (and unsuccessfully) to preserve the Roman Republic.

Seneca, like other Stoics, has a doctrine of nature that is remarkably close to that of Emerson or modern American environmentalists. The wise man (sapiens) will never be bored when contemplating the simple things of nature. The natural beauty of the countryside and the healthful action of the waves can have a calming effect (although there's a memorable passage in which a storm causes terrible sea sickness). He also believed in the simple and strenuous life and the avoidance of luxury and decadence, and there are numerous passages in these letters to his disciple, Lucilius, which decry the ostentatious, self indulgent practices of his contemporaries. These are sentiments and ideas adopted by many in the modern world, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Seneca has no patience for philosophy as a word game or a practice of engaging in hair-splitting arguments for their own sake. He rather sees it as a practice or way of life that all those who seek the good should investigate and adopt. While the Stoics believed in democracy and republicanism, their doctrine of freedom is different from the modern idea of Liberty. Freedom was the ability to endure and pursue the good even under tyranny. While that may be admirable, modern commentators on liberty (such as Isaiah Berlin) have pointed out that defining down the range of one's actions is not a satisfactory solution to the problem of the absence of liberty in society or the world.

No stranger to power himself, Seneca virtually ruled Rome as tutor of the boy Nero--and yet he adopts a quite believable stance of simplicity and humility. It's a good bet these letters will still be found absorbing by readers for another 2,000 years.

The unmannerly guest or Penguin butchers a classic author once again.
By greg taylor
This will not be a review about Seneca. I suppose I will attempt that one day once I manage to go thru my library's Loeb Classical Library edition of Seneca's Epistles.
The purpose of this review is to bellyache about the Penguin Classics' edition of this work. I come not to criticize this translation. I have no Latin. For all I know it is brilliant.
What I am here to criticize is the decision to edit Seneca's work all to Tartarus and back. There are 124 Letters in Seneca's Epistles. Campbell gives you 40. Or just over 32%! Campbell's criteria as to which letters to present is a personal one. He evaluated their interest and whether or not they were repetitive. His is admittedly charming in his own defense on this issue. He quotes Roger L'Estrange (another anthologist of Seneca's) from 1673 to the effect that anyone who complains about the selection is an unmannerly guest who eats at his host's table and then critiques the meal. I embrace this description. I may well use The Unmannerly Guest as my nom de plume for my reviews from now on.
Here is my problem. All too often the editors or translators of the Penguin Classic editions decide that they know better than the ancient author what is valuable about the work for today's reader. Their Plutarch is one such travesty. Their edition of Polybius is another. What makes it more confusing is they can get it right sometime, as with their edition of Livy.
I think they are really missing their chance here. The Penguin Classics series is the perfect publishing series for modern and complete editions of ancient authors presented in their original form as much as is possible.
Let us look at how personal Campbell's choice is. I happen to be reading The Roman Stoics: Self, Responsibility, and Affection by Gretchen Reydams-Schils. She happens to cite 185 passages from Seneca's Epistles during the course of her book. Because I am The Unmannerly Guest, I took it upon myself to count up how many of those passages were not in Campbell's selection. 122 of the 185 or just over 65%. In other words, she made as much use of the letters Campbell did not publish as those he did. His choices were no more representative of Seneca's thought to Reydams-Schils than the letters he rejected.
Here's another way to look at it. Seneca was writing about a philosophy to be lived. Not a system of thought but a guide to behavior. It is inevitable that such a guide would be repetitive. The same sort of issues, of temptations, of annoyances come up again day after day with slight variations (e.g.,anyone trying to raise courteous children knows what I mean). Repetition in an author dealing with such a guide is to be expected; indeed, it is to be appreciated as helpful. It takes time to learn how to live.
I think we ought to take old Seneca and Plato and Augustine and Machiavelli and Locke and so on seriously. When we read them we should try to sink into their way of living not just their way of thinking about that life. Only then can we evaluate how much they speak to us.
The Penguin Classics, accordingly to this Unmannerly Guest, do not help us in this endeavor. And the fact that they have chosen to present us with a highlighted tour of ancients like Seneca and Polybius is a betrayal of the original mission of the series which was to make the classics easily available to the masses. I speak for those masses as much as anyone. And I say, give me the whole da*@ book. Let me be the one to make the editing decisions.

Good as structure reference
By Henrik
When I purchased this book I was under the impression that this book would explain how to create a PDF from the ground up.
Sure - it does that; but one have to use a third party program to do it.
The line "Use the pdftk program to process PDF files from the command line" in the description mislead me to think that this tool was optional. It should have read something like "The pdftk program is used throughout the book to generate PDF files".
As it is I have had to check other sources to be able to generate my own PDF files from my own programs without pdftk.
Therefore this book only recieve three out of five stars from me; it misses the essential part that is the actual creation process of PDF files.

Excellent resource for the software developer working with PDF
By John Murdoch
This is an extremely useful book for the developer who wants to work with PDF files. John Whittington explains the details of how the PDF format (actually formats--there are several) is constructed.

This is a "low-level" book--in the sense of being useful to the software developer who needs to extract data from existing PDF files, or automate solutions that create PDF files. This is a splendid companion for a developer who is working with the iText (or iTextSharp) PDF libraries (or GhostScript).

the world is full of books that explain pdf. ...
By C. F. Mullins
the world is full of books that explain pdf. after awhile it seems ridiculously simple. To follow along you have to go out and buy more stuff. not really much help working from scratch. there are layers missing that one has to go somewhere else to get the 'special version' referenced in the text and examples.

Geometric Transformations II (New Mathematical Library), by I. M. Yaglom

This book is the sequel to Geometric Transformations I which appeared in this series in 1962. Part I treas length-preserving transformations, this volume treats shape-preserving transformations; and Part III treats affine and protective transformations. These classes of transformations play a fundamental role in the group-theoretic approach to geometry.

As in the previous volume, the treatment is direct and simple. The introduction of each new idea is supplemented by problems whose solutions employ the idea just presented, and whose detailed solutions are given in the second half of the book.

Good book for highschool students
By Jon L.
I'm taking a course on competitive problem solving at a local college for high school students. We are starting out by going through the series of geometric transformations by Yaglom. The lessons are quite easy to understand and the problems are very good. I started the books without a clue on how to start the problems and now I can solve pretty much all of them... so the book must be doing its job pretty well.

Simple, but elegant
By Mauro Fiorentini
The book uses only basic notions to show the power of simple geometric transformations. Theorems (some simple, some not so obvious) are demonstrated by means of rotation, reflexion, stretching, in a very elegant way.

Can be enjoyed from High school level up.

With Geometric Transformations I it is a masterpiece of elegance, split into two books.

Problem solving for Olympians
By J. Bogaarts
The Yaglom geometric transformation books are aimed at a mathematical Olympiad audience. The books are not primarily about transformations, they are mainly about how to use transformations to solve problems. Yaglom wrote the book in Russian back in the fifties, presenting geometrical transformations techniques to geometric problem solving. He introduces transformation types and then shows how they can be used to solve problems that otherwise would sometimes be almost unsolvable using elementary (synthetic) methods. Then he presents a set of problems that vary from difficult to fiendish. Full solutions are provided, you will need them. The Russian book has chapters on congruence, similarity and projective transformations that are contained in the three English translations published by the MAA. It continues with sections on inversion transformations that are not (yet?) translated into English.

This is the second of three books, it deals with similarity transformations.

These are great books for problem solving.

The Belgian Hammer: Forging Young Americans into Professional Cyclists, by Daniel Lee

This is the story of what it takes for young Americans to make it in professional cycling. Only thirty-six Americans have competed in the Tour de France since the world’s greatest bicycle race began in 1903. That’s not too many more than the twelve Americans who have walked on the moon. It’s far fewer than the hundreds of Americans who have reached the summit of Mount Everest.
But rising stars such as Lawson Craddock of Texas, Benjamin King of
Virginia, Taylor Phinney of Colorado, Daniel Holloway of California, and Tyler Farrar of Washington state are doing just that as they endure crashes, cold rain, cobblestones, crosswinds, and culture shock on their road to cycling
stardom, which starts in Belgium.

This is the story of the next generation—of riders not yet tainted by drug scandals, of riders still bursting with hope and potential. This is the story American cycling fans need right now.

-------------------

“People, get ready for great stories written well. The Belgian Hammer captures cycling culture.”
—Benjamin King, 2010 U.S. Pro Road Racing Champion

“The Belgian Hammer is the unique story of professional cycling that hasn’t yet been told until now. Daniel Lee has revealed the road map for the next generation of Americans hoping to become successful in Europe, where cycling is king.”
—Jim Ochowicz, President/General Manager of the BMC Racing Team.

“All of us who left our tire prints on the European circuits remember how
racing there shaped us forever. With passion, Daniel Lee gives substance and perspective to the experience of young Americans trying to make it in
Europe; and bicycle racing is illuminated by his craft.”
—John Howard, three-time Olympic cyclist, who set a bicycle speed record of 152.2 mph in 1985

“For those who admire images of cyclists flashing with arms spread wide in triumph over the finish line on blue-sky days, Daniel Lee gives us an insightful, forceful, and gritty account of the rigorous―and frequently perilous―route that cyclists take to force their way up the ranks and develop skills to win. A former racer himself, Dan Lee puts his passion for the sport into his newspaper reporter experience and writing talent. In The Belgian Hammer he follows Taylor Phinney, Benjamin King, Daniel Holloway, and other legends in the making on the USA Cycling national team living in Belgium, where the young bloods from around the world go to test themselves against the best of their generation. They compete in tight packs exceeding 150 riders pumping over narrow wind-blown roads slick from rain while threading through the countryside at unrelenting speed. To spectators cycling matches the grace of ballet. Daniel Lee reveals its uncompromising demands and brutality and heroics.”

Breaking Into the Professional Cycling Circuit
By dakotadude
Racing in Belgium takes all young American rookies by surprise as it's faster, more dangerous, more difficult and the conditions more challenging than anything they've experienced in the States. However, the strong racers usually survive and eventually thrive in these intense Belgian competitions returning to America as professional cyclists.

Interesting, insightful and informative Daniel Lee's THE BELGIAN HAMMER: FORGING YOUNG AMERICANS INTO PROFESSIONAL CYCLISTS keeps you clicking through the cogs as the key races he describes reach critical mass and the young Americans display their raw talent: Displays like Ben King's dramatic breakaway win of the 115 mile US Pro Road Race Championship or Taylor Phinney's US Pro Time Trial Championship win in Greenville in September 2010.

This book describes contemporary American youths' racing experiences -- mostly young men based in Belgium, the groundzero of introductory European style racing -- and how these young guns master the skills needed to successfully ride their way into the future; a future in racing that unfortunately only rewards a very select few. It tells the story of the developmental programs and their primary importance in creating a reality where young American racers can focus on their racing leaving most of the logistics of living in Belgium to others, who just happen to double as coaches.

Reading THE BELGIAN HAMMER makes you want to yank your bike off the trainer and peel off down the road regardless of the fact that the roads are snow-covered and temperatures are in single digits. George Hincapie's Foreword adds a nice touch to a book that should inspire aspiring young American racers to forge ahead and achieve their dreams.

I have read a lot of cycling books. This one is well-written, thoughtful, and informative. I like it because it is not a "mainstream" book that concentrates on a team or a rider. This is an insider book for anyone who loves and appreciates cycling.

Nice look at the path for promising young riders!
By Tobias Holsman
Those of us who follow pro cycling generally only see fully-developed riders at the height of their powers. This is a really interesting examination of what it takes for young riders to make the jump to the big leagues. Since cycling remains a fringe sport in the US, the Belgian Hammer details what it's like for these athletes who must first overcome the general secondary status of the sport in their own country, and then find a way through the barriers of language, culture, and logistics just to have a shot at letting their abilities shine forth on the largest stage. One can only speculate that this book would ring true to a young Spaniard who dreams of playing in the NBA.

Cycling's most popular stars have always won their loyalty through their charisma just as much as through their racing achievements. Dan Lee was fortunate enough to befriend riders who are not only powerful athletes, but compelling personalities. This book will inspire young riders to aim high and provide weekend warriors with vicarious connection to the achievements of tomorrow's champions.

Narratives of Child Neglect in Romantic and Victorian Culture, by G. Benziman

Contextualizing the topos of the neglected child within a variety of discourses, this book challenges the assumption that the early nineteenth century witnessed a clear transition from a Puritan to a liberating approach to children and demonstrates that oppressive assumptions survive in major texts considered part of the Romantic cult of childhood.

Review

'A thoughtful work on a subject that is as urgent now as it was more than a century ago. Benziman's new conceptualization of ambivalences in educational practices and of neglect of child rights yields unexpected and at times iconoclastic insights into much studied texts.' - Professor Leona Toker, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel

'Narratives of Child Neglect in Romantic and Victorian Culture is a major intervention in the history of childhood and its representations in nineteenth-century English literature. Benziman offers a fresh, compelling analysis of familiar concepts, skillfully demonstrating the persistence of older Puritan and regulative attitudes toward the literary child within texts by Blake, Wordsworth, Dickens, and others that have long been identified unambiguously with the emerging reformist and liberatory treatment of childhood during the Romantic and Victorian periods. Rigorously argued and closely attentive to historical and intellectual contexts, including social class, Benziman's study opens challenging new perspectives on the topos of the neglected child and the portrayal of child subjectivity in poetry and fiction.' - Professor John Jordan, Department of Literature, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA

'Addressing the interconnectedness of catechizing and liberating views of childhood from the Romantics to Thomas Hardy, Galia Benziman provides an important contribution to the history of child neglect in nineteenth-century England. Her attention to representations of the child voice in literary texts, combined with readings of canonical and lesser-known philosophers and writers, makes this study essential reading in the field of child studies.' - Monica Flegel, Associate Professor, Department of English, Lakehead University, Canada

27: A History of the 27 Club through the Lives of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and Amy WinehouseB

When singer Amy Winehouse was found dead at her London home in 2011, the press inducted her into what Kurt Cobain’s mother named the 27 Club. “Now he’s gone and joined that stupid club,” she said in 1994, after being told that her son, the front man of Nirvana, had committed suicide. “I told him not to….” Kurt’s mom was referring to the extraordinary roll call of iconic stars who died at the same young age. The Big Six are Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison of the Doors, Kurt Cobain and, now, Amy Winehouse. All were talented. All were dissipated. All were 27.

Journalists write about “the curse of the 27 Club” as if there is a supernatural reason for this series of deaths. Others invoke astrology, numerology, and conspiracy theories to explain what has become a modern mystery. In this haunting book, author Howard Sounes conducts the definitive forensic investigation into the lives and deaths of the six most iconic members of the Club, plus another forty-four music industry figures who died at 27, to discover what, apart from coincidence, this phenomenon signifies.

In a grimly fascinating journey through the dark side of the music business over six decades, Sounes uncovers a common story of excess, madness, and self-destruction. The fantasies, half-truths, and mythologies that have become associated with Jones, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain, and Winehouse are debunked. Instead a clear and compelling narrative emerges, one based on hard facts, that unites these lost souls in both life and death.

From Booklist
Rolling Stones cofounder Brian Jones drowned in his swimming pool; Jimi Hendrix overdosed and choked on his own vomit in a London hotel; Janis Joplin overdosed on heroin; Jim Morrison died of heart failure while in the bathtub of a Paris hotel room; Kurt Cobain committed suicide by shooting himself; Amy Winehouse drank herself to death. All are members of the notorious 27 Club: they all died prematurely young at the age of 27. Their stories are fascinating pieces of music trivia, but Sounes (Fab, 2010) is interested in why they behaved the way they did. What specifically made them so self-destructive? (Sounes includes an appendix of an additional 44 members of the 27 Club, including the bluesman Robert Johnson.) Although only Cobain deliberately committed suicide, Sounes argues that all six killed themselves. All were intelligent and talented, he maintains, but most had personality problems of some sort, such as depression or bipolar disorder; in addition, many were the children of divorced parents and had low self-esteem. Fans of these musicians will be intrigued and saddened by this fascinating and tragic account. --June Sawyers

Review
Praise for 27

“This fine study looks at the tragic history of the 27 Club…. Much of the book's power lies in its refusal to pander to the romantic-melancholy notion of the tortured young artist who lives fast and dies young. Instead the squalor and chaos of their everyday existence is exposed in uncompromising detail…. This book is not about more rock star mythologizing. It's about skewering the mystery of the 27-connection, by exposing its all-too-tragic reality.”—Sunday Times (UK)

“In a multi-stranded biography, Howard Sounes has set himself the task of finding a link between the lives and deaths of these six rock stars…. Sounes's masterstroke is to unearth forensic levels of detail on his subjects…. He has pulled off what could have been a tasteless project with sensitivity.”—The Times (UK)

“This book is the first time that these committee members, as it were, of the 27 Club have been buried together under the same cover…a gruesomely enjoyable read.”—The Spectator (UK)

“The 27 Club is the exclusive members-only society that music stars don't want to join. Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Brian Jones all died aged 27 and the biographer Howard Sounes uses this unhappy coincidence [to look] at the rock-star trajectory that brought them all to a premature end…. Recommend[ed].”—New Statesman (UK)

“Sounes mixes biography with investigative journalism, social science, and rock history into a work that is as engrossing as it is depressing…Though he doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to sensitive information about his subjects, he does write with a care that is refreshing for a topic that could easily devolve into ambulance chasing. Sounes, a true crime writer, is especially incisive when it comes to dispatching conspiracy theories built around many of these deaths. He captures the sad truth behind a club for which a youthful death is the only entrée.”—Publishers Weekly, 9/23/13

“If you like reading about brilliant young people destroying themselves, this is your book…Hard living started early will take its toll, and it’s not a complete coincidence they all died when they did, but it’s not a mystic number either, and Sounes disposes easily with the conspiracy theories that have collected around the dead stars.”—The Age (Australia), 9/21/13

“[Sounes] is a tenacious researcher…[He] painstakingly demolishes conspiracy theories and other forms of magical thinking.”—The Observer (UK), 8/17/13

“Sounes offers a stern corrective to the adage that it’s better to burn out than to fade away. The author takes a refreshingly skeptical view of the belief that a conspiracy accounts for the deaths of Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, dismissing urban legends and murder theories to reveal the similarities among them…A compelling examination of the effects of sudden fame on mentally fragile artists.”—Kirkus Reviews, 11/1/13

“As much as one may have hoped, Sounes dissects the conspiracy theories and puts to bed the lunacy that surrounds these idols deaths. He also succeeds in producing a highly detailed, expertly researched book, with both personal family and close friend interviews, making it a tour de force private biography that belongs on both the shelves of bio fans and anyone that may have been touched by any of the included artists music.”—Huffington Post UK, 10/13/13

“Sounes delves into the lives of the ‘Big Six’…sewing the common threads they share in life and death.”—USA Today, 11/13/13

BookNews.com, December 2013

“While the book begins and ends with the story of Amy Winehouse to appeal to the younger demographic, older readers will also enjoy the depth of research and insights from the author's original interviews with friends and family of those profiled.”

Word Bookstores (Tumblr), 1/2/2014

“[A] comprehensive (but not overwhelming) history of the members of The 27 Club. Sounes writes of their lives realistically, pointing out numerous similarities in their upbringings, relationships, and behaviors that link them in their tragically early deaths. Also, there’s no glorifying of the rock star life or the ones who lived it, which makes this an especially intriguing study…A great read for any music fan or curious mind.”

WomanAroundTown.com, 12/16/2013

“While some have credited a supernatural reason for the performers’ untimely demise, Sounes presents a clear-headed evaluation, and neither judges nor idolizes the lives and deaths of the performers about whom he has written.”

Houston Press Rocks Off blog, 1/7/14

“Sounes completed an impressive list of original interviews for this book, which shed further light on area like Jim Morrison's last days in Paris, Cobain's fragile mental state, and Winehouse's seemingly insane drinking bouts.”

MediaMikes.com, 1/4/14

“For the first time the information about these six people is available all in one place combined with one person’s perspective on the events which are surprisingly similar.”

January Magazine, “Best Books of 2013,” 1/3/14

“A tragically wonderful read.”

PopMatters.Com, 1/27/14

“Make no mistake, Sounes did heavy lifting to make this book as authoritative as possible…If you want exhaustive, at times exhausting detail regarding their collective debauchery, 27 may have that kind of perverse train wreck appeal…Sounes helpfully demolishes any/all conspiracy theories, ranging from the familiar (Morrison lives!) to the far-fetched (Hendrix was murdered)… 27 also serves as a corrective of sorts for the half-assed mythologizing, particularly of Morrison and Cobain.”

John Shelton Ivany Top 21, Issue #438

“Great read! Goes into detail of past music artists that passed away at age 27.”

Milwaukee Shepherd-Expres, 4/9/2014
“So what’s behind the curse of 27? Sounes explores the lives and deaths of the six most prominent casualties.”

“Fans of these musicians will be intrigued and saddened by this fascinating and tragic account.”—Booklist, 11/15/13

“Without falling into the trap of sentimentality, Sounes also looks at the aftermath of these tragic losses through new interviews with family, friends, and former bandmates…[Sounes is] a good researcher…Despite the morbid subject, this sharply written and insightful title should have a home in any public or music library, where it will likely yield high circ counts.”—Library Journal, STARRED Review, 11/15/13

“Sounes’ clear-eyed view of his subjects’ behavior is welcome in a rock biography…It would be easy to sensationalize the adherence of performers in this book to the creed of ‘sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,’ but Sounes takes an even-handed approach to their exploits.”—Seattle Times (Soundposts music blog), 11/15/13

“The first time you heard Light My Fire or Me & Bobby McGee, it was probably from a scratchy record and cheap speakers. 27 brings those memories back—with a lot less static. This is, in fact, almost a read-in-one-sitting kind of book, so thoroughly fascinating is author Howard Sounes in his method of storytelling…If you’re a fan of classic rock or blues, or if you just want a good look at stardom gone wrong, 27 gets five stars.”—The Bookworm Sez

“The strength of 27 lies in the way Sounes weaves in and out of the dark underbelly of the last fifty years of pop culture, maintaining the connective tissues through each individual star’s unraveling and untimely exit…This is a book that examines tragic lives, it’s not selling conspiracies or cosmic hokum…Sounes is a great tour guide because he’s neither shocked, clutching his pearls at the collective behavior, nor is he excessively voyeuristic. He’s thorough. But 27 never feels like an exploitative recounting of every awful drug-induced escapade like so many tabloid-ready ‘exposes’ do.”—Biographile.com, 11/13/2013

“If Howard Sounes’ 27 covers a subject that might seem uncomfortable or even a bit morbid to some, the author can at least be forgiven for doing so in a mostly even-handed, and tasteful manner…To his credit, Sounes treats his subjects with respect, mostly avoiding the more sensational and ghoulish stories that have already been done to death elsewhere…An entertaining, breezy read and an often fascinating addition to the wealth of material already out there on these famous rock star deaths.”—Blogcritics.org, 11/16/13

“Plainly aimed at readers fascinated by specific pop-music artists whose careers burned both brightly and briefly…Meaningful to people who celebrate, even idolize these performers.”—InfoDad.com, 11/14/13

“Does a superb job of showing the connective-ness between the unfortunate members of the infamous ‘27’ club…Sounes lays the facts out bare taking the superstition and mysteries out of this club. While also touching on the mysteries of a few of the twenty seven clubs deaths, the author keeps it logical and stays away from the excitable thoughts and conspiracies…Sounes does a wonderful job at giving little known information about the artist and a very well rounded biography before flowing into another artist’s story…A well articulated map of how these artists are connected, and stars are crossed.”—Groovey.tv, 11/12/13

“By using the 27 phenomenon as its starting point, the book manages to create a study of fame, damaged people and the occasionally disastrous results when you mix the two. And, naturally, when you mix drugs into the bargain…While this is not a biography, it serves as a more than adequate one for anyone wishing to learn about the real people behind the canonized music…when it comes to the story of talent, fame, and excess—and the volatile combination these things make for in an already wounded young life—Howard Sounes has produced a gold record.”—A

“The book brings readers up to date with new findings, rumors and conspiracy theories. It could also serve as a primer for young musicians of what not to do if they achieve massive success.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 12/1/13

“Sounes’s even-handed approach is that of a crime reporter searching for the truth and insight into what connected these individuals in life and in death…It’s a compelling read.”—Curled Up with a Good Book, 11/26/13

“Sounes furthers our understanding of what happened to these talented, young people…A provocative and persuasive read that goes further than any other publication on this particular topic.”—Sacramento Book Review, December 2013

“For anyone with an interest in the music scene, this has to be ‘must’ reading…A fascinating book.”—Bookviews blog, December 2013

“Sounes does an admirable job of cutting through a lot of the drama without claiming to have definitive answers for some of the speculation…27 is thoroughly researched and features many new interviews with the principals who were in the inner circle of the six featured individuals.”—My Big Honkin Blog, 11/24/13

“[Sounes] makes a strong case that ‘behind the coincidence is a common narrative’ for all six of the most notable members of the club. All were as troubled as they were talented, supremely vulnerable to exploitation and addiction, too young to know how much time they should have had left.”—Boston Globe, 12/15/13

“Sounes succeeds by moving well beyond that coincidental data into a hard look at the darkly powerful effects of sudden fame on relatively young, and generally fragile artists ill-prepared to deal with such pressures.”—Metroland, 12/12/13

“[Sounes] debunks the mythologies surrounding each in a refreshingly detached, matter-of-fact way…Sounes peels back the dense layers of the celebrity psyche and scrutinizes the underlying family problems, emotional issues, and mental illness that drove the stars to self-medicate with drugs or numb themselves with booze...It’s an intriguing probe into whether certain personalities—particularly those in the public eye—are more at risk of a premature demise.”—Examiner.com, 11/12/13

A sad and sordid tale
By Tim Niland
It has become engraved in urban legend and folklore that many prominent entertainers, particularly musicians, die during the 27th year of their lives. The author of this book, Howard Sounes, examines this phenomena through the lens of six of the most prominent members of the "27 Club," musicians Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. What results is a mix of dogged journalism and TMZ-like gossip mongering. A sordid path of addiction runs through the six musicians examined here, hard drugs: heroin and heavy pills washed down with copious amounts of booze led them down the road to ruin. The book becomes a series of cautionary tales as we watch musician after musician squander their talent and then their lives. To Sounes credit, he does not try to mythologize the musicians he writes about, and he tries to bring a well rounded portrait of each. It does get to be a bummer after a while, the stories are very similar: musician rockets to fame, takes to alcohol and drugs to alleviate the grind of touring and the hangers-on and sycophants that surround them. Addiction takes its toll and the musicians begin to crumble, felled by suicide, overdose and accident. Alas, some of those very toadies that caused the stress are the ones supplying many of the quotes for this book. It's a sad story, but captivating at times.

Great Book!
By Job L. King
This was a very well researched and written account of rock's main stars who died at the age of 27. I have read many books about all of them and I thought I knew just about everything there is to know about each of them, but I was wrong. I was pleased to read the many details in this book that I had never known before. I think this book is one of the more truthful books you will find. The author really did his homework and provides his sources at the end of the book, along with a long list of other musicians who also died at the age of 27! If you're into rock star biographies, this book is for you!

No new information here and way too much Amy Winehouse.
By Scott Blake
This book is good for those who have little knowledge of the lives and deaths of Hendrix, Jones, Morrison, et al. Otherwise, it is a rehash of what has been written elsewhere. It is also heavily weighted about Amy Winehouse, which is a negative for me because I have no interest in her. Many readers may find themselves skimming through parts which don't interest them. The author writes about the psychological similarities in those who died at 27 as though it were groundbreaking information. Sorry, Howard, but we pretty much figured that out already.
