This book is divided into 13 chapters. Each chapter begins with an introduction and ends with review questions and problems. Chapter 1 introduces the number system, binary arithmetic and codes. Chapter 2 deals with Boolean algebra, simplification using Boolean theorems, K-map method and Quine-McCluskey method. In Chapter 3, logic gates and implementation of switching functions using basic and universal gates are discussed. Chapters 4 and 5 give a brief description on combinational circuits like arithmetic and data processing. Chapter 6 describes flip-flops and realization using flip-flops. Chapter 7 discusses synchronous and asynchronous counters and the design of synchronous counters in detail. Chapter 8 presents shift registers, shift counters and ring counters and their design. Chapters 9 and 10 are devoted to the design of synchronous and asynchronous sequential circuits, respectively. Chapter 11 concentrates on memory devices, which includes ROM, RAM, PLA, PAL and FPGA. Chapter 12 deals with logic families like TTL and CMOS logic circuits. Chapter 13 describes Hardware Description Language (HDL) for Digital Circuits. A number of appendices provide the student a quick glance of the topics. All the topics have been illustrated with clear diagrams. A variety of examples are given to enable students to design digital circuits efficiently. This book rocks

Well DavidJi gets all five stars from me for this great book. I stayed up late so I could start reading it as soon as Amazon downloaded it unto my IPad.(it was worth the wait) Then I stayed awake most of the night enjoying my copy of his book, I just did not want to put it down. David is so informative and at the same time playful.
I recommend SECRETS OF MEDITATION to everyone, you will not regret it and it could change your life as mine has changed when I started to listen to his guided meditations.

Excellent book to understand the benefits of meditation in your daily life!

The first thing that called my attention when I received this book and started leafing through it was a comment most readers will miss: "The author donates all proceeds from this book to charity". How would you not want to read a book whose author is so caring and giving? It showed me that every page of this book is filled with hearty advice and a genuine desire to help the reader achieve a state of deep meditation and understand the benefits of this ancient practice.

The language is easy to follow, davidji is down to earth, engaging, and guides the readers in a very interesting path highlighting different types of meditation techniques and what to expect from each of the meditation styles. He tells his own story about his spiritual journey and illustrates it with many examples on how he achieved his proficiency in meditation.

It is the first time I read davidji and I'm hooked! It's not easy to follow a book about meditation, it becomes dull and boring at times, however, this book is exciting and inspiring! It's a great read and will really prompt you to try meditation. You can choose one that fits you better from the different kinds described in this volume: bodymind, visual, sound, energy, sensory, Buddhist, mantra and chanting meditation. Each is described in detail and each chapter explores the best technique on how to practice them, with very helpful hints and encouragement.

At the end of the book, davidji explores the myths around meditation and demystifies some beliefs about its practice, with accessible and easy to understand questions and answers.

This is a great book for those who want to start exploring the benefits of meditation and also for those who have been already practicing it. If you're serious about understanding what meditation is and how it can transform you, don't miss this jewel of inspiration and guidance to a better lifestyle!

Pepys prodigy or a Go Ask Alice con job?

The Basketball Diaries compiles three years in the life of Jim Carroll from the ages of fourteen to seventeen, over the fall of 1963 to the summer of 1966. During this time Carroll was often drugged out on the streets of New York. Carroll, like myself, kept a diary during this time of his life yet unlike him I was not an aspiring basketball star (nor a drug addict). The level of writing coming from a druggie as young as fourteen seemed unbelievably coherent. I could not help but wonder how much editorial help he must have received prior to publication. No clean and sober fourteen-year-old, or seventeen-year-old for that matter, can write as well as Carroll. How can a boy strung out on heroin or zonked on grass, who skipped school so often write so well? We are either dealing with a Pepys prodigy or another Go Ask Alice con job. There is however some credibility to Carroll's teenage writing prowess in that, in spite of his nodded-out altered state, he managed to win a scholarship to a school for gifted students. Still I can't help but wonder about the promise he might have shown if he hadn't wasted his youth on scoring dope.

Carroll's eye for description was succinct and from what I can remember, accurately reflected what adolescent boys pay attention to. I could read whole chunks of diary entries without pause, even the pages without paragraph divisions. He wrote exactly what he was thinking, and to stop midway in order to reread (a habit of mine) would destroy the experience of being inside his drugged mind. The Basketball Diaries was pure stream-of-consciousness writing, and even Jack Kerouac raved about it.

Carroll let his bravado run confidently after a basketball win:

"Anyway, with the other starters out, I get to score all the points and wind up with 42, which felt good because I haven't really been scoring that many lately. I can also see little Most Valuable Player trophies in my head if this keeps up. We won by an awful lot. After the game they gave us free sodas and s*** and all the local people stood in the lobby as we left and patted us on the back and said, 'Nice game, son,' and all, the whole scene strictly out of 'Leave it to Beaver,' all the old men Fred MacMurray types in tweed suits and the women, a pack of poodle walkers, standing around with a lot of make-up and sort of thinking how cute we were. They had these teased up bleached hair-dos that reminded me exactly of the higher priced 14th St. whores. I wanted to ask one if she wanted to s*** it off but we just hopped into the car for that b**** trip downtown. It's a Friday night and we all wanted to go to the East River Park and get drunk, do reefer and sniff glue. And that's exactly what we did."

There are many hilarious episodes like this in the Diaries, those which are linked to drug culture and Carroll's junkie lifestyle being the funniest. I was laughing out loud as he and some teammates were presented with the serious dilemma of selecting which one of two pills to take before a game. The matter was indeed crucial to the team's performance, because one of the pills was an upper and the other a downer, and no one could remember which was which. They ended up picking a pill at random and the story wouldn't have been funny if they had chosen the upper. You will read how the players s-l-o-w-e-d down as the game went on and missed even the simplest passes and setups.

Another diary entry had me tittering during my lunch hour when Carroll called the cops on a birthday party for his neighbour's four-year-old daughter. An act of revenge for the neighbour calling the police on a noise complaint at Carroll's, he had the last laugh when cops strode up to the door, scaring the daylights out of the tots and ruining their happy scene.

Carroll captured some episodes from 1960's history, such as the latest Dylan releases and the great Northeast blackout of 9 November 1965. I was surprised that there was not one mention of the Beatles, since Carroll was in New York at the time of the Beatles' American arrival in February 1964.

It is the perceptive eye with a humorous twist that Carroll has for detail that struck me the most. Again, I wonder how one so strung out on dope could be alert enough to recall what he had seen--because there isn't a chance that he could have written these diaries while high as a kite. So I have my doubts about the diaries' authenticity. The next passage was hilarious, and while void of drug references, increases its veracity:

"My Marxist pal, Bunty, from my new school, finally talked me into going to one of his Communist Party meetings today. It was in this sleazy place on 11th St called Webster Hall. All the girls looked like reformed Mary Magdalenes. Everyone moans a lot and plays folk songs, one of the requirements seems to be that you have to be ugly. I was wearing my seediest clothes and I still came off looking like Arnold Palmer or something. I dig these m***********s, but the speeches bored the s*** out of me. I went home and told my old man how the government suppresses the proletariat from his due. 'I am the proletariat, you dumb bas***d,' he said, 'and I think those m***********s are off their rockers. Now get the hell inside and do your homework.'"

I liked the imagery at the end of the next passage. I will never think of wedding cake in the same way again:

"Who did I run into today but old Ju-Ju Johnson, fattest junkie I know, could hide a complete set of works, a cooker and innumerable bags of dope in the layers of fat that flop one by one down towards his belt like a drenched wedding cake."

By the time he was seventeen, Carroll was a junkie, selling himself, thieving and committing armed robbery to get money to buy drugs. He described himself as a starving walking skeleton who had no function in life other than to score. That is how his diaries end, abruptly, with the cry of an addict who is so sick of the game:

"I got to go in and puke. I just want to be pure..."

Very good book filled with nice to know and need to know information about the industry and tips on how to get ahead of the competition and make money with online porn. Immense talent in a little package

Thank you to all my reading friends who suggested The Awakening as one of their favorite classic novels! I have been trying to branch out into new literary worlds, and the classics is one genre that I hadn't yet touched. Still a novice, but my journey has been so profitable thus far. The Awakening was one novel that is incredibly easy to read and holds such powerful prose in so few pages.
A taboo subject back in its day, The Awakening tells the story of one woman's emotional journey from a stifled, miserable marriage to a spirited and lusty freedom. Young Edna Pontellier feels trapped in a loveless, although pampered, life with husband, Leonce. Stirrings of independence begin one summer while resorting in Grand Isle, an island off the coast of Louisiana. These new feelings have begun a profound change in Edna, liberating her beyond belief. Thus ensues an infidelity that dreams are made of, although at the expense of her marriage and motherhood.
Hardly shocking in this day and age, The Awakening's subject of marital infidelity and physical lust for another is always a pageturner. The theme of the novel -- Edna's torment at the chains that bind her and the flutterings of an unbridled passion -- is brought to life with beautiful writing in simple, elegant words. I am surprised to find such a passionate and provocative story within its pages. Short but penetrating, The Awakening will move you.

quietly submersed

Kate Chopin's "The Awakening" is the classic novel about women that "Madame Bovary" purports to be but isn't. It's not just a "woman's" novel, though, it perfectly (and poetically) captures the inner life of a solitary person who is forced to live for the sake of others. And while this has been a distinctly female position for a large part of Western history, it is a position that can be identified with by just about anyone in our current age of employee internet-use monitoring. This is a twentieth-century tale of discomfort with and reaction to antagonistic surroundings. For those of us who don't feel the need to procreate in an overpopulated world, Edna's (and presumably Chopin's) discomfort with children will make sense. For those of us who may not always know exactly what we want out of life, this story will strike a chord.
Kate Chopin's writing is deliberate but not labored. She is particularly successful at depicting ambiguity in a way which is highly descriptive and communicative. This is a skill which I can't praise highly enough, and it culminates in an ending which is absolutely perfect. While criticism could be raised against "The Awakening" as another apology for the suicidal artist, Edna's literal and symbolic escape is less pretentious than Harry's in "Steppenwolfe," nor as indecipherable as that of any of Joyce's creations. Kate Chopin's novel is truly a classic in the sense that it should be a part of any survey of American literature. The Norton Critical edition is the best way to go, too, with helpful biographical information and literary criticism. If you want a more enriching experience with this novel, I'd highly recommend this version.

Surprisingly not heavy-handed

Note: I do not believe that The Awakening is the sort of novel that relies on plot twists and surprises. It's *how* the story unfolds rather than *what happens* that is important. However, several folks have claimed that they needed a spoiler warning, so here it is: You have been warned.

Kate Chopin wrote this story of female self-actualization back in the late 19th century, but it's as applicable today as it was then. I think we all feel trapped by decisions we've made capriciously or because we've been told they are correct, and we all consider, even briefly, escape. The main character in this novel not only realizes that she has trapped herself, but she actively seeks to free herself. Her action, rather than just emotion and despair (a la Goethe), is what separates her from the herd.

Here's the low-down: Edna is a woman, probably in her 30s or so, married to a successful financier and mother to two charming children. She summers on an island, probably to escape summer diseases in the city, New Orleans. One summer she acquires a friend, Robert. Although married women in this society frequently have male friends, Edna is an outsider, and she takes Robert's attentions far too seriously. Apparently, he is similarly infatuated. Basking in Robert's attention, Edna understands at last that she has discarded her youthful dreams and hopes and that her current life is unfulfilling. She takes small steps toward freeing herself, and Robert seems a willing accomplice for a while.

During the course of the novel, Edna relearns who she is, reclaims the dreams of her youth, and abandons her husband and children. The author is careful with this last, making it seem tragic and irresponsible, yet ultimately unavoidable. By the last 20 pages, Edna is free.

There are, in my opinion, two weakness in the book. The first may be considered a spoiler: toward the end, Edna tells Robert that she is an independent woman now who is not the property of any other person. But she's lying. Her actions show that she is dependent on Robert, needy for his love and attention. I still can't decide if the author created this break between words and behavior on purpose, or if she really intended us to believe that Edna was wholly independent.

The other weakness, riding on the coattails of the first, is that Edna does not take responsibility for her own awakening. She claims that Robert "awoke" her.

Edna does in the end devise a solution that proves her ultimate freedom and independence, and it is the only solution that works. But I won't spoil it by writing it here.

The thing that makes this book so lovely is that it isn't preachy. So many modern girl-power novels just sort of slam you over the head with the girls-first-and-men-suck mantra. This book is about Edna; it doesn't purport to be about all women. It's a very personal work, and the narrative hand is light. It leaves us, the readers, free to recognize the little bits of Edna in us all, and although the rest of us may not ultimately choose Edna's course, it gives us hope that such freedom is possible, even after the fact.
