White Lies was GREAT! Howard keeps you emotionally involved!

This book was one of Linda Howard's best! Right from the start I felt a strong interest and bond with Steve. Although he was near death and couldn't remember his name, his strength and character were so compelling that it was like you really knew him or wished you had. And Jay, she has all the qualities of an intelligent, strong, and loving heroine as she quietly fights to help a man, she barely knows, survive and love again. This is a book that stays with you, and personally I've read it at least 6 times, and I didn't want to put it down any of those times! I got so involved in the story that I laughed and cried right along with Jay and Steve. This is one of the sequels to Diamond Bay, as was Midnight Rainbow and Heartbreaker, and they were all well written, without any lulls in the action. It made me wish for more when they ended. Thank goodness for sequels!

Loved it!

One of Linda Howards best! I read it in one day simply because I could not put it down. I think it had a great start and an even better ending. Jay is approached by two men the very day she loses her job and is asked to identify her ex-spouse who was a victim of an explosion. The chemistry between them sizzles even before they know what the other looks like. It wasn't love at first sight as the first sight wasn't there for either of them. It only got better. It's a fast paced book you won't regret reading. The best thing about LH books is that none of her books are based on constant fighting between the main characters until the end when all works out. Her books make you feel good throughout... except Sarah's Child which I didn't really like because of the female character without a backbone.

Cute Story

This was a cute story. It's your basic Linda Howard story line. (You know the one -- strong woman with a few issues and of course she can't find a man to save her life. Then enter hunky man with his own set of emotional issues.) Still the story flowed and I would recommend it to any contemporary romance fan in for a quick read. The story is basically about a burned out "workaholic woman" who is informed by the FBI that her husband was in a terrible accident. The story continues with the scenario of "is he really her husband?" "and just how far will she go to protect this man who may or may not be her husband?" Do not want to give too much away, but you get the gist of the story line. Still I enjoyed the novel - very quick and enjoyable read.

The troops did not even have the opportunity of fighting, as they wished . . . and hemmed in by woods, lakes and the bands of ambushed enemies, were entirely cut off by those foes, whom they had used to slaughter like cattle...The savage enemy mangled the half-burned body of Varus. His head was cut off and sent to Marobodus [a barbarian king] and by him sent to the Emperor; and so at length received honorable burial in the sepulcher of his family.” - Paterculus, ancient Roman historian Every great nation or empire has had at least one horrific military loss or disaster in their history, and the Roman Empire, perhaps the greatest empire that ever existed in the Western world, was no exception to this rule. While Rome certainly suffered defeats and outright massacres over the course of its long and storied history, none of them were as disturbing for the Empire as the battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE. This battle, which took place in Germany, is also known as the Varian disaster, named after the governor of the Roman province, Germania Publius Quinctilius Varus. Varus was not only the Roman governor of the Roman controlled sections of Germania, he was also the highest military authority, being able to make decisions as to the who, what, where, when, why and how of military maneuvers and operations. It was Varus, then, who was in direct command of the Roman legions destroyed in the battle. The battle remains pertinent not only to military historians and archeologists but also to modern military officers around the world as well. As recently as 2009, the United States of America’s Army Command and General Staff College published a work that focused upon the Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest. This work was an examination of the battle in order to help understand the failures made by Varus, and how to avoid them. While it may seem unusual for a modern military to examine the mistakes of the past, it isn’t; the Army used the battle as an example of how a theoretically inferior force, the Germanic warriors, were able to defeat a superior force in the Roman legions. Indeed, the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest featured some of the finest fighting forces in the world – the Roman legionaries – and a group of people whom the Romans didn’t consider human at all – the Germanic tribes. Nonetheless, the battle between these two forces, in the narrow confines of the Teutoburg Forest, would be a turning point in the histories of both nations. Never again would Rome seek to establish a colony and create a functioning province out of the Germanic area; in fact, the Romans never ventured east of the Rhine River after the disastrous expedition. For the Germanic tribes, while they would later suffer from punishment excursions by various Roman legions following the battle of the Teutoburg Forest, they proved that they could hold their own against the might of the Roman Empire and that their land was indeed their own. Good story

I thought this book about the battle of Teutoburg Forest was interesting especially because the training of the Roman legions played a major part in the disaster. According to the book, Roman legionnaires were severely punished for cowardice and any type of major infractions which forced the widely scattered units to attempt to fight when possibly running might have saved the bulk of the legions. Of course I will not forget Arminius who persuaded the Roman governor Varus to trust him while he led the Romans to ruin. The most interesting thing to me about the story is that Arminius was never able to unify the German tribes under his rule. I guess the best thing about this battle from the German perspective is that Rome never tried to conquer and annex Germany into a Roman province again.

Never underestimate your enemy or overestimate your own ability.

This was a very concise and interesting work. Shows that no matter how good you are, there's always some one who's a little better. The Legions had trod very heavy footed just about everywhere they went, but the Forest showed the world (such as it was) that they were able to be beaten. The Germanic tribes that did
unite were more than enough to decimate three legions.

Most interesting piece of Roman history. A smaller force of Germanic tribesmen, considered barbarians by their Roman counterparts, inflicted a most humiliating defeat upon three mighty Roman legions, killing them to the last man.

TO THE STUDENT

This book is written for you, the college student, who has had little or no experience with courses in art history. While you are familiar with how English classes are run, and feel comfortable with the format of science labs, what you will experience in an art history class is entirely new. As the class begins, the lights go down, and slides are projected on screens in pairs. Certainly, you have been to slide lectures before, but in those cases only one slide was projected at a time. And not only is the visual format new, but now your professor is actually talking about the slides. You had always thought that art was meant to be admired in silence. How are you, a student, supposed to put your own words to great works of art? In the upcoming weeks, you will be asked to do just that—to speak about images, to write about them, to remember them, to prioritize information about them—in sum, to engage with them visually in a way that has never been asked from you before. This book is designed to guide you through the process, assisting you with art history papers, exams, and note-taking. It will also help you with two frequently asked questions: "Why take an art history course?" and "What in the world do I do with a major in art history?" Finally, knowing that you are already saddled with tedious reading assignments, I have written the book in a style that is conversational and humorous.

TO THE TEACHER

As teachers, we often forget the profound disorientation that first-time art history students can experience. Yet as I have learned from numerous conversations with my, students, the transition from other courses to art history is not a natural one. It often takes weeks for students to become acclimatized; some, particularly in large lecture classes, never do. "This is my first art history class," I am told after lecture. "I don't know what I am doing." Those who have previously taken a course or two are regarded with awe, as though they are members of some secret society.

This book will accompany the student through the adjustment process. It is intended to be read either straight through, in tandem with, or prior to your lectures, or as a reference text. Its organization reflects what I believe are the standard components of the introductory art history class as taught in colleges and universities in the United States. Hence it focuses on the traditional canon. I admit that African, pre-Columbian, and Native American art are not covered here, nor are newer forms of art, such as video and film.

Each chapter will address a different aspect of the course. Chapter One emphasizes the value of art history as a discipline. Chapter Two is devoted to note-taking and listening in lectures. Chapter Three covers the process of writing response essays. In Chapter Four we deal with taking art history exams, and Chapter Five explores research projects. Although many existing guidebooks define basic terms and concepts used in the discipline, this book also explains how to take art history: how to listen to a lecture, how to discuss images, and how to study. Chapters will include strong (and weak) examples of exam answers and paper extracts. They will also address some of the usual worries of art history students: "How can I possibly write a five-page paper describing one work of art?" The concluding chapter focuses on career options in the field.

About the Author
Jack Vance is one of the greats of science fiction. He has been writing for more than 60 years, and in 1997 was honored as a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America. A Charming Changeling

Madouc, the third book in Vance's Lyonesse Trilogy, is probably the best. The first two books, Suldrun's Garden and The Green Pearl, are wonderful, but the title character, Madouc, and her search for her pedigree, are among the most charming characters and quests in fantasy. She steals the show.
Casimir, the relentlessly scheming king of Lyonesse, has learned the child he thought was his grandaughter, Madouc, is in fact a fairy changeling. That is somehow wrapped up in the mystery of Dhrun, son of King Ailias of Troicenet, of whom it was prophecied by a magic mirror that he would be the king of all the Elder Isles. Not if Casimir can help it. He wants that throne for himself.
And there are much larger, darker schemes afoot, as the evil magician Tamurello and the mysterious witch Desmei plot against Murgen, the Elder Isle's greatest wizard, who alone keeps the Elder Isles from sinking into the sea.
And into this web of political and magical intrigue wanders Madouc, determined to learn her pedigree, possessed of a bit of her fairy mother's magic and a truly wonderful charm all her own. It is Madouc who sets this novel apart from other fantasies. Vance does a splendid job creating a central figure who will beguile and amaze you.
Vance blends myths from half a dozen cultures into a seamless whole. The Elder Isles are saved, if at a terrible cost. The kingship is resolved, after a terrible war. And Madouc even learns her pedigree. The book is full of surprises, and sly references to other legends. As just one example, you will learn how the Holy Grail got to where Sir Gallahad could find it...
You should read the whole Trilogy. If for some reason you cannot, read Madouc. It's a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful trilogy.

Fantasy-lovers, take heed! Madouc is third in one of the greatest fantasy trilogies ever written. You will fall in love with the fairy changeling/royal princess whose search for her heritage takes you on a merry chase. Read all three of the Lyonesse books by Jack Vance-you won't regret it. A note: Madouc won the award for Grand Fantasy in the year 1990.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lyonesse

Well, here's the finale of Jack Vance's Lyonesse, and I'm sorry to see it end. This novel was about Madouc, the changeling princess of Lyonesse, and her interactions with Casmir, Sollace, Aillas, Dhrun, Shimrod, Throbius, Sir Pom-Pom, Umphred, Twisk, et al.

Madouc maintains the quality of this excellent trilogy -- it's filled with clever prose, charming characters, and lots of imagination. Jack Vance's careful planning produced a tight plot and Madouc wrapped up all the loose ends from Suldrun's Garden and The Green Pearl.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lyonesse, but it may not be for everyone. It occurs to me that these books are a lot like Monty Python. They're fast-paced, weird, silly, outrageous, and (somehow) smart.

I'll give you one example: the magician Murgen realizes he's being spied on by someone who is disguised as a moth, so he sends Rylf to follow the moth and find out who it is. The moth flies away and joins a thousand other moths who are flying around a flame. As Rylf watches, one of the moths eventually drops down, turns into a man, and walks into an inn. But Rylf doesn't take note of the man because, as he figures, the laws of probability suggest that the particular moth he's after must still be flying around the flame.

If you don't find that hilarious, you may not enjoy Lyonesse as much as I did.

Part of what I love most about Jack Vance's humor is that he doesn't tell us it's funny. It's a completely deadpan delivery. So, when King Throbius (King of the Fairies) assures Madouc that "fairies are as tolerant as they are sympathetic," there's no narrator or character who explains to Madouc (and, thereby, us) that this does not mean that fairies are tolerant. I have never read any author who does this as beautifully as Jack Vance does, and I loved it.

Great piece of Historical Fiction

This was a really great book that kept me reading for a few days. It really showed me what it was like for a Jewish girl to live through turn-of-the-century Russia. This was a summer reading book for me at school, but I'm certainly glad I read it! I would reccommend this book to any and all who are looking for a great read!

Give it a chance....

I read this book with my 10 year old son for Holocaust Remembrance week although this particular book is not set for the Holocaust I thought this book was a wonderful book to add to our reading during that week because the main idea of the book is about a Jewish family in 1900 that is living a nightmare in Russia under the control of Nicholas the Second a Czar, that either kills Jewish people or makes them serve in the Russian Army to be killed.

The book started extremely slow for both myself and my son. Main character Rachel, doesn't like spending time with her great-grandmother Nana Sashie until her Nana starts telling her the story of her childhood and how she and her family escaped Russia. Very interesting and heart breaking story.

I usually love author Kathryn Lasky's books in fact her Guardians of Ga'Hoole as well as Daughters of the Sea series are so wonderful pulling you in page after page. The Night Journey pushes you away page after page. I mean it does get better as you go along, we gave the book a fighting chance and finished it. However one word OK 2 words will sum this book up for me SLOW and SLOWER.

As not to include spoilers I want to say of course there are sad moments but I wish that there had been more happy ones when it came to present day Rachel and her life, I wish that her and Nana Sashie would have found even more things to talk about besides just this, maybe about Rachel as well.

My son fell asleep easy to this book so if you are looking for a story to put kids to sleep this is a must. HAHA

I admired the education I received from this book, the writing was awesome, some words needed a dictionary for my son but that was just part of the learning. The Night Journey was not awesome but also not the worst I have read for middle grades.

Atkin, a strategy director for a New York ad agency, believes the process through which consumer brands build customer loyalty is equivalent to the way religious cults recruit members—and, he says, that's a good thing. To him, cults are little more than well-defined affinity groups engaging in a few activities outsiders find unusual because they believe something different. Yet his superficial consideration of groups like the Unification Church and the Landmark Forum rarely gets into the specifics of those belief systems, instead presenting a fuzzy image of people bonding together to give their lives meaning. (Obvious negative examples, like Waco and Jonestown, are cursorily dismissed as badly managed.) Atkin then takes this broad definition and applies it to the commercial realm, making a reasonable case that Harley riders and Apple users, among others, follow similar behavioral patterns. But he overuses the term "cult" to the point of meaninglessness: it's one thing to compare Marine Corps training to an initiatory ritual, quite another to label eBay or JetBlue customers cult members just because they use the product repeatedly. While little argument can be raised against Atkin's proposition that "few stronger emotions exist than the need to belong and make meaning," more conservative readers may balk at his notion that the decreasing power of our culture's traditional institutions is an opportunity to exploit those emotional drives for profit. Perhaps would-be cult leaders will be able to use Atkin's marketing strategies to repackage themselves for broader mainstream appeal.

Atkin, an advertising executive, examines the techniques to develop extreme buyer loyalty and discusses cults and cult-brand members' motivations, desires, and attitudes. The elements common to brand definition (used by companies such as Harley Davidson and Saturn) and to cult definition are ideas of community and belonging, ideology, devotion, and advocacy. Atkin researched many cults, including established religions, fan clubs, current and ex-marines, AA, and numerous CEOs of cult-brand companies and cult leaders. With the growth of sophisticated consumerism and the reality that institutions are increasingly inadequate sources of meaning and community, Atkin believes that alternative religion and brands that offer these benefits will flourish. His advice for establishing a cult brand includes understanding that people "buy" people and not things and ideas alone and investing at least as much into developing a cult brand as your members do in emotional and financial commitment, energy, and creativity. Meh...

This book is out of print. I don't even recall where I heard about it. As a whole it's an interesting look at brand loyalty. Saturn, Nike, Harley -- they have cult followings that rival few others. It was interesting to read the interviews with Marines and religious cult members to see how similar the sentiments are from faith to brand loyalty. But, I didn't get much of an education from it on building cult status for a brand. If you can find it, maybe it's worth the read. But don't go out of your way for it.

Better as a set of case studies than a "how-to," but good overall.

The title of this book makes it sound creepier and more duplicitous than it is. First of all, forget all the negative connotations you have when you hear the word "cult." Atkins broadly defines a cult as a "group exhibiting a great devotion or dedication to some person, idea, or thing." A cult brand, then is when the group or community is built around a brand.

This, of course, is not a new idea. Marketers have always tried to get people to love their products with religious devotion. But Atkins articulates the similarity between brand cults and traditional cults and does extensive research into both, with the end goal being that marketers can apply the techniques of traditional cults to build brand cults. The traditional cults he uses (again, remember he has a broad definition) include the Catholic Church, Mormon Church, Unification Church, Hell's Angels, and a few more. On the brand side of things are the usual suspects: Apple, Ebay, JetBlue, Mary Kay, Saturn, Harley-Davidson--brands that have communities built around them.

The comparisons are interesting, but there is nothing shocking in his findings. People gain some of their identity from the groups, social or otherwise, to which they belong. Groups are formed around shared causes, interests, or philosophies. Therefore, it is only natural that as brands have come to create their own stories, characters, and philosophy (oftentimes independent of the functional benefit of their products), groups start to form around them.

I always find the case studies to be the most interesting part of these kinds of books. There's a lot to learn from brands that have done it right. Where the book falls a little short for me is when Atkins tries to define the rules for creating a cult brand. Sure, there are some guidelines to follow (e.g. don't alienate your consumer, don't lie to people, etc.), but most of them are just guidelines for creating good brands in general. I would argue that not every brand in every category can become a cult brand. And even a brand that has existing cultural cache and follows all the "how to cult your brand" rules is not guaranteed to become a cult brand. There are too many factors, too many stars that must line up. Sure you can try to encourage a cult brand (who wouldn't want to), but the implication that you can control the factors that lead to a brand becoming "culted" seems a bit of a stretch.

That all aside, this is a good read, and a deeper examination of a concept that first piqued my interest when I read Alex Wipperfurth's book, BRAND HIJACK.

Great reading for marketers and consumers alike

You know all about cults: They are these manic groups of easily-led people who fall under the spell of a charismatic but demented leader. Right? Not so, according to Douglas Atkin in this book. In it, he argues that organisations need to embrace the principles of cults in their marketing, moving their brands away from just advertising to zealous cult-like affinity.

This is a controversial approach - and Atkin himself admits he doesn't always meet with enthusiastic approval when he brings up the subject. But his point is not to praise the behaviour of cults, but to encourage businesses to select the strong points of cults and apply them (presumably more benignly) to their brands.

Some of this might sound doubtful, unethical and even downright frightening (for example, "Demonise and persecute those on the outside!"). For cults that take over a person's life, this can certainly be the case. However, Atkin argues that when these principles are applied in an organisational context, they create a safe, secure sense of community that enhances your customer's life.

Whether you agree or not, it's a compelling read.
