Simply delicious!
By Tchitcherine
This is a wonderful book that "works" on three different levels:

First, it gives the history of the most important sweets around the world, and traces their lineage and background. For example, I never knew that baklava can be traced to ancient Greek honey cakes, or that American apple pie derives from Dutch tarts.

Second, it provides the ethnological context for each sweet and describes the national, religious, and social significance of many humble desserts. For example, the discussion of cacao in Latin America and chocolate sweets in Mexico that combine ingredients from all over the world, or the detailed description of the "baklava wars" that rocked the Middle East and the Balkans. In that respect the book brings out many interesting connections; for instance reading about the Nepalese halwa made me think of similar Lebanese and Middle Eastern delicacies with similar sounding names. The final result, when I tried it, closely resembles my version of halva. This sent me to the book’s index, trying to figure out the possible route of transmission.

Lastly, and most importantly, the book gives numerous unique and wonderful recipes from every corner of the world. The bibliography is as legitimate as you may find in an academic book, and the Roufs trace every recipe, often to authoritative local chefs or to online sources, and sometimes to the best and most authoritative source of all -somebody's grandma.

If I could change something about the book, I would have the desserts indexed alphabetically -now they are listed under their respective countries/regions of origin. Oh, and wait, about the "baklava wars"...

The intimacies, culture, and history of sweet treats around the world: a food adventure
By Gretchen Ruth
We like to use the green Michelin guides when we travel - it helps us learn about all of the intimacies, culture, and history of a place. This book is like a Michelin guide for, well, sweet treats around the world. It puts sweet treats in the context of all that is unique and interesting about a country, how things evolved, and why and how we eat the sweets we eat.

More than just an encyclopedia, it is an adventure. I find myself getting immersed in a country (e.g., the Netherlands) and learning about my favorite cookie, the "speculaas", and I have a big "aha!" moment. Then I jump into Australia and learn about the history of the beloved Pavlova (the meringue, cream, and strawberry dessert that I make in the springtime) and that it is named for dancer Anna Pavlova who visited in the 1920s, perhaps representing her tutu and her light as air style.

Very readable ... and so logical to approach sweet treats from an anthropological point of view. I have enjoyed learning about the foods of the places I've been and the places I hope to go. PLUS -- my eyes have been opened about American sweet treats, from Red Velvet cake to M&Ms. I think of myself as a foodie, and this sophisticated yet down-to-earth book is right up my alley (and yes, I have lots of little sticky tabs in the recipes section. The first thing I'm going to make is the lemon souffle that Mrs. Sivertson brought from Norway.)

"Sweet Treats around the World" is a lovely combination of being extensively researched and at the same time, written from the heart. Both my husband and I are really enjoying the book.

Innovation Economics, by Robert D. Atkinson, Stephen J. Ezell

This important book delivers a critical wake-up call: a fierce global race for innovation advantage is under way, and while other nations are making support for technology and innovation a central tenet of their economic strategies and policies, America lacks a robust innovation policy. What does this portend? Robert Atkinson and Stephen Ezell, widely respected economic thinkers, report on profound new forces that are shaping the global economy—forces that favor nations with innovation-based economies and innovation policies. Unless the United States enacts public policies to reflect this reality, Americans face the relatively lower standards of living associated with a noncompetitive national economy.

The authors explore how a weak innovation economy not only contributed to the Great Recession but is delaying America's recovery from it and how innovation in the United States compares with that in other developed and developing nations. Atkinson and Ezell then lay out a detailed, pragmatic road map for America to regain its global innovation advantage by 2020, as well as maximize the global supply of innovation and promote sustainable globalization.

Pragmatism, Not Ideology, Key to Remaining in Pole Position in the Innovation Race
By Serge J. Van Steenkiste
Robert Atkinson and Stephen Ezell systematically challenge the ideological tenets of the dysfunctional Washington Economic Consensus that the U.S. economic elites cherish (pp. 54-56; 73-74; 78-80; 82-84; 93; 231-232; 250; 360; 363-364). Messrs. Atkinson and Ezell convincingly demonstrate that the U.S. is losing the innovation race by making the same mistakes that the United Kingdom made during its dramatic industrial decline from the mid-1950s to the late 1970s. The outcome of this decline has been trifold: 1) a decline in real manufacturing output as a share of gross domestic product, 2) the emergence of chronic trade deficits, and 3) slower per capita economic growth than most comparable nations over a sustained period of time (pp. 9; 32-56; 57-84; 360).

If the U.S. does not want to follow in the footsteps of the United Kingdom, it needs to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and acts decisively and boldly before it is too late (pp. 31-32; 62; 85-127; 162-163; 234; 250; 252; 263). Therefore, Messrs. Atkinson and Ezell call for a new Washington Economic Consensus based on the following ten principles:

1. Although the U.S. still has important strengths in sectors such as advanced aerospace and medical devices, it is no longer leading in innovation-based competitiveness. Think for example about the fast declining manufacturing sector, the more rapid growth of R&D overseas, or the relative decline in the number of scientists and engineers. This decline is expected to continue unless business, labor, academia, and the government work together (pp. 9; 17; 25; 34-46; 49-54; 59; 82; 89; 95; 97; 103; 109-124; 181-187; 227; 233; 236-237; 312).
2. The major economic role for the government is to organize societal resources (research, finances, knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurial effort) to generate new products, processes, and business models. The key to success for innovation is to combine flexibility for organizations to restructure and to innovate with security for workers. The security of workers should be tied to employability, not to employment (pp. 233; 300; 315-316).
3. Fiscal discipline is important, but funding for policies to spur innovation and competitiveness should not be subordinated to the short-term individualistic orientation of both the Left and the Right. The U.S. business community and society do not seem to be able to summon the will to invest for the long term and to grow wealth anew (pp. 13; 27; 66-68; 71-72; 75-76; 80-81; 233; 242-245; 312; 319; 359-360).
4. Globalization can be beneficial to the U.S. under two conditions. First, the country needs to systematically bring cases whenever U.S. interests are being hurt, even if U.S. companies do not want them to proceed. This policy would make clear to mercantilist nations, especially China, that threatening to punish U.S. firms for bringing cases is futile. Secondly, the U.S. has to correctly structure the three sides of the innovation success triangle, i.e., an effective business environment, an effective regulatory environment, and a strong innovation policy system. The U.S. innovation policy environment falls short in the areas of tax, trade, technology, and talent (pp. 10-11; 13; 31; 134-135; 141; 209; 215-216; 218; 233; 245; 251; 254; 259-263; 316-318; 320).
5. More and more nations have adopted a zero-sum, beggar-thy-neighbor innovation mercantilism to attract or to grow high-wage industries and jobs at the expense of the U.S., and in violation of the spirit and / or letter of the law of the global trading system. However, the export-led growth model pioneered by Japan and abundantly copied thereafter is hitting a wall due to the increasing inability of the U.S. and Europe to import at high enough levels (pp. 6; 11; 77-78; 90; 159; 191-225; 233; 259-263; 327; 331-332; 334; 356-357).
6. America's role in the global economy is to be a tough competitor that looks after its own economic interests first. The U.S. foreign policy has been focused mainly on military, not economic issues since the end of WWII. Furthermore, the U.S. needs to take the lead in working with other liked-minded nations committed to enforcing the global rules of fairly growing an innovation economy (pp. 46-49; 76-77; 100; 104-108; 159; 192-209; 210-211; 218; 224-225; 230; 233; 319; 346-348; 350; 352; 356; 359; 365-366).
7. Firms in traded sectors, high-growth entrepreneurial companies, and U.S.-headquartered multinational corporations are the jobs, innovation, productivity, and export engines of the U.S., which need to be encouraged by policy. Contrary to popular belief, Wall Street and Main Street play a secondary role in these areas (pp. 14-15; 27; 130-133; 142-159; 233; 274-275).
8. The best tax code is one that offers more incentives to invest in the U.S. Therefore, the U.S. Congress should take measures such as making the R&D credit permanent and more generous, recognizing the importance of high-skill immigration, and giving the Office of the United States Trade Representative more resources for trade enforcement. At a combined state-federal rate of 32 percent, the U.S. effective corporate tax rate is one of the highest in the developed world (pp. 171-176; 234; 238-239; 241; 298).
9. The federal government needs to not only support what the authors call "factor conditions" (e.g., basic scientific research and education), but also key broad industries and technologies (pp. 99; 134-141; 234-235; 245-249).
10. The government should pick winners by identifying general industries and broad technology areas of national economic importance and play a decisive role in mobilizing public and private resources to meet clear opportunities and challenges. Firm size should not be a criterion to pick winners. More and more U.S. companies realize that they are competing against foreign companies that are backed by their states (pp. 14-15; 69; 91-101; 124-127; 133-141; 158; 176-181; 192-209; 234; 275; 279; 291).

In summary, Messrs. Atkinson and Ezell invite Americans to recognize that the U.S. is no longer in pole position in the innovation race and to act decisively and boldly before the ongoing decline becomes irreversible.

MUST READ for anyone interested in innovation or economics in general
By Kevin
I picked up a copy of "INNOVATION ECONOMICS: THE RACE FOR GLOBAL ADVANTAGE" last week and was pleasantly surprised. The book was well-organized and was interesting to read. Many complicated concepts were laid out and often times were reiterated with real-world examples.

The book disused on how the US stumbled into the great recession (2007-2009) and went on to explain how the US is no longer the global innovation leader (and how England declined as well).

The authors went on and warned that the global race for innovation is current under way, and unless the US government implements public policies to embrace innovation and the current mindset, we may lower our standard of living (they provide a powerful case in support of increasing R & D initiatives to support innovation).

After discussing the challenges, the authors lays out a plan (if successful) could regain its global advantages in the next 10 years.

The book was 440 pages, but was a quick read. The book was jammed with fresh ideas and relates greatly to what is currently happening in the US and is a MUST READ for anyone interested in innovation or economics in general.

Ambassador of the Dead, by Askold Melnyczuk

One Sunday morning, Nick Blud, a successful Boston physician, is home in bed when he receives a phone call from Ada Kruk, the mother of a boyhood friend. Ada summons Nick back to his old Ukranian-American New Jersey neighborhood, where something unspeakable has just happened-exactly what, no one is willing to say. To find out, Nick sets off on a journey through the past, his own as well as that of Ada's son, Alex, who long has struggled to escape his family's legacy of violence.

A harrowing tale about friendship and love, America and the immigrant's dream, Ambassador of the Dead introduces Ada Kruk, a mother like no other, at once Mary and Medea, Sarah and Medusa. A study of ambitions gone awry and appetites too easily gratified, this novel is also an unflinching meditation on exile and assimilation and the price of love.

Dan Cryer of Newsday labeled Ambassador of the Dead “…Artistic gold” calling Melnyczuk “an able analyst of character and a superb storyteller.” And, Esquire magazine said “A novel so precise and understated it’s stunning.”

From Publishers Weekly
This tale of Ukrainian immigrants' attempts at adjustment to life in America has a dreamy affect, but its undercurrent of emotional honesty gives it bite. Nick, a Boston doctor, is drawn back to his hometown of Elizabeth, N.J., by the news that his childhood friend Alex is in trouble although he does not yet know what kind of trouble. He finds first that Alex's mother, Ada, once vibrant and attractive, is now embittered, lonely and nearly blind. Nick reminisces about his past, focusing on memories of his friend for most of the book. As a child, Alex was mischievous, but eventually became more and more wild, due in part to his father's abuse and subsequent abandonment. Throughout the novel he is agitated by society and by his own psyche, gradually losing his sanity. Melnyczuk (What Is Told) writes exceedingly well-controlled miniature narratives that begin as soft-focus reveries and develop into darker tales that confidently clinch the attention and release it just as smoothly. One of Alex's mother's early lovers seems gentle during their initial courtship, then expresses sadomasochistic desires; she pursues another failed romance with an ‚migr‚ poet. Even the story of the narrator's marriage is laced with strife: his wife confesses that she had rejected his earliest advances because he was Ukrainian and she was Jewish. The book drifts in a Proustian fashion, vividly portraying the difficulties of cultural assimilation until the jarring conclusion. Recollections that might have fizzled in another author's hands here grow luminous and haunting.

From Library Journal
This ambitious, harrowing novel by AGNI editor Melnyczuk (What Is Told) tells of Ada Kruk, an innocent Ukrainian girl victimized by cruelty and violence during World War II. During the occupation of her homeland, Ada is brutally raped by a soldier one winter night on her way home from skating at a local pond. Soon after, her father is arrested and murdered by the occupying Nazis. The memories of these and other atrocities haunt Ada for the rest of her life long after the war ends and long after she immigrates to the United States and begins a family of her own. Battered and confused, Ada is a deeply tragic figure, and Melnyczuk tells her story with great sympathy and insight. As Ada's narrative unfolds, Melnyczuk also explores profound questions related to violence, the weight of the past, and the kind of pain from which it is impossible to recover. A very powerful and disturbing novel; recommended for all libraries. Patrick Sullivan, Manchester Community Coll., CT

From Booklist
Nick Blud returns to his old New Jersey neighborhood at the request of Ada Kruk, the mother of a boyhood friend. Not ready to explain why she invited him, Ada stalls by recounting stories of the past. At Ada's insistence, Nick chronicles what he knows of the Kruk family history. After the family emigrated from the Ukraine, Ada and her sons found themselves abandoned by her husband. She took solace in the company of men and in speaking to the ghosts of her dead relatives. She was adamant regarding teaching her sons about the country they left behind, and mourned the life she could have had and the choices she should have made. But the history of the Kruk family isn't finished until Ada tells the final chapter, revealing the tragic reason she called on Nick. Through the story of the Kruks, Melnyczuk intelligently explores the problems of assimilation, the pain of war, and the fear of leaving the past behind, and he poignantly captures the disillusionment and disappointment when the American dream never materializes. PROCESSING THE SINS AND PAIN OF THE PAST
By Larry L. Looney
We are each a storehouse of the accumulative pain that we have experienced, handed down to us by our parents and other significants -- how we recognize, view and process that pain draws the boundaries of the way in which we live our lives. Some people have a tougher time dealing with their past than others -- and when, as in the case of Nick Blud, the narrator of Askold Melnyczuk's dark, rich and extremely moving novel, that pain is multiplied by the suffering endured by his parents and grandparents, it's an almost insurmountable task. To make matters even more difficult for him, his parents -- Ukranian immigrants who have made a new life in America -- are reluctant to give many details about what they experienced in WWII in their homeland. This novel chronicles Nick's journey inward and backward to fill in the gaps in his family's past and come to terms with them. There are several characters in the novel who are making this journey -- and, indeed, aren't we all, to varying degrees? Each of them has their own discoveries to make, their own ghosts to exorcize, their own truths to define. Some of them are up to the challenge -- and some of them fail in devastating ways.
The mood of Melnyczuk's novel is dark -- but the writing is very rich, expressing the desperation and hope, the pain and joy, the terror and exultation in which his characters are awash. The emotions here run strong and deep, and they are honestly -- at times brutally so -- portrayed. A premise is expressed toward the end of the novel -- and this isn't a spoiling revelation, don't worry -- about the nature of darkness and light in our lives: 'Death, a writer once observed, is the dark backing a mirror needs if we are to see anything'. We need one in order to know and appreciate the other.
I found the novel to be modrately compelling for the first 100 pages -- then it picked up steam and held me unrelentingly in its grip for the duration of the story. The characterizations are full, developed vivdly, and memorable. This is one of the more unusual tales I've come across in the last year or so -- very entertaining on one level, and very instructive on another. I'll have to check out the author's earlier novel, WHAT IS TOLD -- I'm extremely impressed with the skills and style he has shown in this book.

WALKING WITH THE DEAD
By S. F Gulvezan
The narrator of Askold Melnyczuk's masterful novel, a successful physician, thinks that to a large extent he has escaped the past - the troubled lives of his Ukranian immigrant friends - and become successfully assimilated into the American dream of upward mobility. In the course of the novel he learns that the past is not like the pages of a photo album that you can leaf through when the spirit moves you; rather, it lives within you, influences and molds you, whether you want it to or not, and can spring out at you, like a tiger crouching in the bushes outside your sunny suburban home. A difficult theme, and Melnyczuk handles it well.

Taming the Enforcer's Flirt (A Paranormal's Love Book 4), by Charlie Richards

Cornelius Roister is a flirt, has been since coming out. He lives loud, proud, and for the moment. What only his best friend, Gustav Gus Hermance, knows is that it’s a defense mechanism, an act, used to keep people from getting too close. People that are close can hurt you, and he’s had enough pain to last him a lifetime.

When Cornelius visits Gus at his new home, he is ecstatic to discover his mate in Einan, a gargoyle enforcer. Until him and large-and-in-charge Einan have their first personality clash…and then their second. They just can’t seem to carry on a conversation without disagreeing or arguing. Is Cornelius’s mating doomed before it even gets started? Or can Cornelius and Einan find some common ground?

A Rhino and a Gargoyle Find Their Mates
By Sophia Rose
It took me a bit to remember Cornelius a secondary character in Gus and Tible's story, but it was fun to see a second rhino/gargoyle match up when he encounters Einan when he comes to visit his friends.

Cornelius has a lot of baggage from his past that hadn't come out in previous encounters with him. At first, I didn't like how he seemed to jump to conclusions and putting the worst representation on things Einan did and said, but then after getting his story I only felt sorry for him and was glad that he'd found Einan.

Einan is a domineering sort and can be a bit gruff so it was good that he'd been paired with such a gentle fun-loving mate. They get hot and heavy pretty quick, but then their relationship starts to develop too.

I enjoyed the big confrontation with Cornelius' ex. What. A. Jerk! I was so glad to see Cornelius get a bit of his own back. And that bit of surprise at the end for them after they witness the hatching of Gus and Tible's son (too cute), was just a bit of adorable extra.

Love this series as I do many of her other books. A Paranormal's Love series is an off-shoot and runs parallel line of stories to the older Wolves of Stone Ridge and Kontra's Menagerie stories. I do recommend reading them all as they publish to get the best experience from the books.

Great follow-up
By Nalla Jodi
Really enjoyed this title. I was kinda surprised by the leads thought they were perfect for each other and was glad Ms Richards kept us up to date on previous characters, Gus and Tible, and their baby (cute). Definitely some hot scenes and a bit of action. Loved the character Vane hoping to see him with his own book. Another tortured soul... Nice little surprise at the end also, thought that was sweet. All in all really good.

One of my favorites!
By HisBabes
Cornelius FINALLY gets his love. I enjoy reading all the different series Charlie Richards creates and how all the characters interconnect. Cornelius first arrives in 'Gustav's Gargoyle Adventure, Wolves of Stone Ridge #14'. He is a good friend of Gus', then Tible and even Bobby Truman who eventually mates with Maelgwn.

In this installment Cornelius comes to the Gargoyle Clutch just outside of Durango to be there when Gus & Tibles egg hatches. There he meets Einen, the Head Enforcer for the clutch and Cornelius' mate. Trouble of course ensues.

There are instances of light BDSM here and discussions of past trauma, rape and abuse but it is dealt with nicely. Well, as nicely as rape, abuse and trauma can be. Cornelius will always have psychological scars but he is able to confront and stop his abuser with support from his mate and friends.

What I enjoy so much about this authors work is the characters seem so real. None are perfect, make mistakes, have scars (both real & mental) or problems that they bring to the mate bond. While everything is all wrapped up nicely with an HEA at the end you end the book feeling like you've made new friends.

Excellent
By E. Smiley
This little book is excellent, but don't be fooled by the brief page count; it takes more time than you might expect.

Pumpkin is a 9-year-old girl growing up between two households, competing for her father's attention, dealing with her mother's alcoholism and her stepmother's disregard. And because she's growing up in Zambia in the 1970s, there's some violence from across the border as well. Then, flash forward to her as a grown woman: she thinks she's made peace with her parents, but the scars from her childhood continue to distort her life.

I found this book very engaging, with a writing style that soon immerses the reader in the story and makes it easy to relate to Pumpkin and her experiences. The characters are believable without having to be explained, the protagonist especially; Pumpkin often behaves poorly, as both a child and an adult, but after accompanying her through some experiences that - though relayed in an understated fashion - are pretty traumatic for a child, we can understand why. Often in fiction characters who have been damaged in some way will isolate themselves, but in my experience Pumpkin's story is more common: she's desperately grasping for relationships even as her mistrustfulness causes her to sabotage them.

Meanwhile, I appreciate the author's craft here: each chapter has its own arc, with a beginning, middle and end; though this is certainly a novel, several chapters are self-contained enough to work as short stories. The writing is good and very readable, and the details are vivid and bring the scenes to life. I do wish the publisher had invested a bit more in a copyeditor, as there were a couple of unnecessarily confusing moments (I didn't realize till near the end that BanaBee is Bee's mother, for instance).

But the publisher's biggest mistake here is that they apparently haven't marketed this book at all. Which is a shame, because I suspect it would appeal to a wide audience. I would recommend this to English-speaking readers who haven't read much from Africa, or to anyone looking for an engaging character study.

Amazing Work
By Chi Woni
I normally go for thriller or suspense novels but lately I have been broadening my reading horizons and found myself delving in to the world of literature on a different level. Patchwork is an absolute gem of a book that totally immerses you in the world of a young girl born outside marriage to a wealthy father, who is at an age where the harsher realities of life are not yet apparent. I don't want to be a spoilsport but it's definitely one of those I figure should have found a better home on mainstream shelves and not tucked away in the African writer's corner :) At any rate it is well worth the read and I will be looking for more from this author. Highly recommend it. Must be something to get me who never writes reviews to come out and champion this. DO NOT PASS THIS ONE BY!!!!!!!

A nine year old girl tries to cope with changing realties and family tensions.

there is a time gap in mid story but it seems to work out anyway. Have to give this writer credit for
perseverance and putting the patchwork together with integrity. . Looking forward to her next story.
