A book for finding your way back.

P.L. Travers is an inspiration. She knows what is in a story and she shares it with us in this marvelous book. Each new essay or story reveals a wealth and insight that changes the colour of your world view. It is a book to set you back on your path and a book that can be dipped in and out of, read and re-read always giving something for you to take away. P.L. Travers does for grown ups in this book what Mary Poppins did for everyone.

P.L. Travers, while best known for "Mary Poppins", was also a scholar of myth. This slender volume contains a fair fraction of her work, mostly written for the magazine "Parabola" over the course of many years. Each essay studies a common theme or element of traditional stories.
Travers has the ability to combine an absolutely astounding amount of information on myths and folktales from all over the world into insightful and fascinating text. Throughout weaves the story of her own life, told in snatches, reminding the reader again and again how story reflects aspects of our own lives. "Only Connect", the phrase borrowed from E.M. Forster by Travers, sums up the underlying purpose which motivates every essay.
This book continually draws me back for the wisdom and inspiration it offers. I love it because it makes me stop and think.

Amazing...

We read children's stories to each other at bedtime - at least sometimes. We went through the "Mary Poppins" series, and I noticed there was an adult undercurrent, a flavor of the mystical, lurking in the stories. So I sought out what else Travers had written, and came across this. Wow!
Turns out Travers edited the philosophical magazine "Parabola" for many years, and this book is a collection of her contributions and editorials. There is tremendous depth here, as well as great writing. Each chapter is fortunately short - they are so rich it's like a box of chocolate truffles - eat one and it's heaven - eat more and it's too much. "Fear not the heat of the sun..."

Zoey Carmichael has just been caught red-handed. Or pink-handed, if you're going by the color of the fur-covered handcuffs she's holding. Though Zoey assures the sinfully handsome stranger who spots her eyeing the handcuffs she's just looking for gag gifts for her sister's bachelorette party, both of them know there's more to it than that. Deep down Zoey yearns for a lover who will tie and tease her to the ultimate pleasure. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, Zoey will never have to admit that to the sexy stranger, as she'll never see him again after that embarrassing encounter...or so she thinks.

In town for his brother's wedding, Trace Raines doesn't expect the shy, sensual woman he encountered in an adult store to be the sister of the bride! But Trace isn't going to let the opportunity fate has handed him pass by. With her secret desires and his own talent for shibari working in his favor, Trace is prepared to bind Zoey to him with emotions that are far more powerful than the ropes he'll tie her with.

The classic "meet cute" gets turned on its head in the deliciously erotic Tie Me, Tease Me. With two likeable protagonists, it was easy for me to be swept away by this tale of love, lust, and the adventure of sexual discovery. While Trace might be a master with shibari ropes, Zoey's inexperience with bondage opens the doorway for readers to take her journey with her. Having never read Reese Gabriel's work before, I was excited to read Tie Me, Tease Me. I was not disappointed. It was a pleasurable read that tempts and teases, just like the title suggests.

cute, funny, kinky and sexy

An enjoyably humorous little palate cleanser about the kid sister of a Bridezilla, who discovers the brother of the groom is also a Shibari master during a Wedding Shower joke-gift run to an adult store. Since she's always had bondage fantasies, it turns out they're a perfect match! Maybe these two suffer from a case of Insta-Love, but it works in the context of the story.

The sister, Zoey, is no meek mousy subbe-in-waiting, but a tart-tongued (if insecure) financial industry professional - which attracts wealthy playboy/businessman Trent greatly. Trent, thankfully, leaves his 50 SHADES at the door - yeah, his girlfriend/subbe recently left him, but he's angrier she took his favorite shirt and pair of handcuffs when she did than that she left! Both say they know hooking up, with bondage, at their sibs' wedding is a mistake, but their chemistry is too strong to deny (and believably presented here!). Trent sensually "forces" Zoey to have elevator sex with "mental bondage" (he tells her to stand, hands against the wall, while he plays with her). Then, when he tries to leave her be before they Go Too Far, he hogties her and goes to leave when she tries to press the issue - so she safewords out, he frees her.... and they jump each other a minute later! Torn sheet restraints, a blindfold, and a very early room service breakfast provide the impetus for more bondage lovemaking, which Zoey responds to so eagerly Trent has that bad feeling he's falling hard for her -

Bridezilla's Candace's third-act meltdown forces Zoey and Trent to drop their kinky sex plans in midstream so they can come to her rescue, and provides a much-needed context for her prior controlling b*tch-goddess behavior. Candace basically had to raise Zoey after their parents' marriage split up, so she's terrified of losing control for fear she won't be able to keep Zoey or herself safe - which Zoey admits she knows, and for all their contentiousness loves her and lets her have her way usually. The sisters end on much better terms than you would have thought possible (with Candace explicitly trying to put Zoey and Trent together), except Zoey fears Trent just sees her a kinky wedding fling, and is afraid of having her heart broken by falling for him....

It ends with what the Goodreads reviewers call a "HFN" ("Happy For Now") ending - Zoey finally gets to experience for-real Shibari at Trent's hands, and the two decide afterward that maybe they could try being a couple, and see where it gets them. It's fun, a bit deeper than you'd expect, and surprisingly romantic under all the "Wedding From Hell" jokes.

AMAZING (Because caps makes it true)

This book is amazing. In order to get the most from this review, you need a base of what kinds of books I enjoy. I love Brandon Sanderson (The Stormlight Archive is my favorite series currently), The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, and The Gentleman Bastards by Scott Lynch to name a few.

Now on to why you are here. This book has many elements that I have been looking for. Too many fantasy authors attribute an all powerful character to an interesting one. Within 50 pages, the author has the character besting 5 other trained individuals and by the end of the series, they might as well be facing the army by themselves. Another problem is creating intensity. How do you have down time when an army is invading your land or something troubling is happening? It is hard on the reader to stay in a consistent stressful time. More for the sake that we start rolling our eyes and say "Of COURSE that would happen now".

This book does not have those issues. The reader ages with the main character. The initial thoughts from the character are a mixture of immature and insightful. This is the delicate balance of writing a 13 year old character. You have to write them including things that they would do at that age, yet still be interesting and believable. This book stays true to it's character as he ages. He has flaws and moments in the book where you laugh and cringe for him. For all those interested, the female characters in this book are well-written as well. They aren't in need of saving and aren't a guy in a woman's body.

In short, this book has as realistic characters as a fantasy book can come with page turning intensity mixed with laugh out loud moments. I believe the author said it took 10 years to write this book (with a job on the side) and you can tell he put it to good use. I am so excited for the next 3 in the series.

Good for all readers, awesome new coming-of-age fantasy

I was amazed by this new fantasy coming-of-age novel, which exceeded all of my expectations. The book is HUGE, but I read the whole thing almost non-stop in two days, constantly intrigued by the mysteries of the created world and life of the main character and supporting characters. The story is told entirely from the main character's point of view, which I really enjoyed, as the constantly switching perspectives of most new fantasy works often annoy me. Although the main character is a young teenager for the whole story, his occasionally childish perspective makes me think of that age more with nostalgia than annoyance at the MC's immaturity (which usually happens in books with young MCs). All of the characters are realistic in their actions and motivations, and, although there is typically a clear line between the good guys and bad guys, no character is perfect and struggles with various faults and temptations. The book even addresses on more serious topics such as abuse, cultural intolerance, and religion, though never in a way that feels preachy or overdone (more in the way of addressing serious topics that are real and need to be addressed in the life of the main character). The main character (though young) has enough faults to be relatable but enough strengths to be admired and someone I would like to be (an important and difficult balance that many books have a difficult time maintaining). Additionally, you get a TON of reading material for a cheap price, with no discernible editing errors (very unexpected and amazing in an indie author). Also, despite handling some heavy topics, this book has content suitable for all ages of readers (no cursing, sex scenes, or gratuitous violence), although the writing style is in no way simplistic or dumbed-down for younger readers. When thinking of what the target audience of this book probably is, I realize that I can't imagine an age past 10 that I would not immensely enjoy this novel.

The only possible faults with this book that I can come up with are that it follows a very overdone fantasy trope (a gifted young boy's coming-of-age in an academy) and that the next books in the series are not out yet. Despite following an overdone theme, this book brings me back to why that theme is so popular, and in my opinion is second only to (if not even with) Rothfus' Kingkiller Chronicles, one of my all time favorites. Even following standard rules of this genre, everything feels very realistic for youths of that age (I especially liked the way the young romances were handled). This is also very much the first book in a series, and there are many potential mysteries and avenues for development of characters and the created world that are hinted at in this book but left to future books to encounter more thoroughly.

All in all, I LOVED this book, more than any I've read in years, and can't wait for the next in the series. I will soon be recommending this to both friends and enemies: friends to share in the enjoyment of this first book, and enemies to share the suffering of waiting for book 2.

A review for the more mature audience

First off, let me get this off my chest. This book read like a knock off of Anthony Ryan's Blood Song, but for a younger age. At the beginning I figured Jonathan Renshaw and Anthony Ryan had a shared imagination but as I read further, I started to doubt it. Sorry Jon, but this book reads like you tried to re-write Ryan's work; not so far as to call it plagiarism, but close enough to turn my stomach a bit. Anyways whatever you do, don't recreate his second two books. Tower Lord and Queen of Fire were terrible!

That said, the book, while not even close to the level of Anthony Ryan’s, was an enjoyable read. Written more for the younger crowd, some of the book read like the Hardy Boys or other young teen novels.

The biggest issues (no plot spoiler's this is purely a review of Renshaw's writing):
A: The clumsy way he developed Aedan and his relationship with his father was by far the biggest distractor from the book. I kept trying to guess what was going on without even coming close. It pulled me out of the story as I puzzled what I was reading and why. I put a spoiler at the very end of this review. I suggest first time readers go ahead and read it so as to clear some things up and clarify some of the events in the beginning of the book. I don't know why it was written this way but it made no sense.
B: Renshaw is a little naive and I had to ignore some of the author's concepts forced into the plot in contrast to the very world he was attempting to create; ie modern social issues and technology crammed into the wrong era; its fantasy, but even fantasy has its limits. Additionally, Renshaw's military tactical understandings need work. These parts weren't so bad that I had to force myself to read through them but they distracted from the story.
C: Renshaw relies a little too heavy on the forced narrative that a lot of writers get caught up in when the character is "training." A lot of sentences droned on about the training but there was little meat; it felt like gnawing on bones. This distracted away from the book and sometimes it felt like I was reading "Disney movie magic" where the lead character sings a song and is now transformed into a hero. And at other times I felt like I was reading a recipe rather than a story due to the monotony and laundry list of what they were "training" to do. If you read Anthony Ryan's Blood Song (mentioned above), you will understand where I'm coming from; there is a stark contrast between these two writers. Anthony Ryan got it right, if fact more than any other writer in my history of fantasy IMHO. When you read Blood Song, you didn’t read about the training, you experienced it and it was raw. Renshaw didn't get it wrong but he got it a lot less right. It was just words with little supporting emotion.
D: Renshaw's pacing was a little off. It was as if Renshaw was at odds with himself, on one hand creating the stereotypical fantasy young hero genius surrounded by clumsy old oafs and on the other, trying to maintain the reality and fragility of the 13yo.
E: Renshaw's foreshadowing and overall narration needs work. He continues to fall victim to the classic "narrator induced" foreshadowing where he tries to narrate suspense in to parts that usually doesn't need it. Additionally, there are times where the book (I want to say plot here, but there wasn't much of one; see the next comment) is progressed with force by the narrator/author and the reader just has to hit the "I believe" button and continue reading.
F: Such a slow and lumbering plot. Imagine you’re driving on vacation and stuck in traffic for 8 hours. That’s how the plot progressed. For more than half the book, or even the entire book depending on how critical you are, the main plot of the series is never presented, or understood. It felt like the entire book was an intro and book two will be the actual start of the series.

While I come off as critical, I did like the book. It didn't keep me up all night, but being in a fantasy book doldrums, it was an overall enjoyable read.

Aedan's dad is abusive and beats him and his mom, giving Aedan a complex. I don't know why it took so long to reveal this in the book.

INCREDIBLE!!

The back covers reads: "The great plan of salvation is a theme which ought to occupy our strict attention, and be regarded as one of heaven's best gifts to mankind." -- Joseph Smith

You can judge a book by its cover with this one. There is much symbolism on the breathtaking front cover, and the hard cover format had pages that were literally so soft. It was a work of art, a top quality production - well worth the extra $7 for the hard cover.

Having finished reading this book, I can say that "it's about time" that these doctrines have been restored and are made available in print. They were clearly taught frequently among the prophets at the time of the Restoration, in great abundance. The doctrines have been interspersed through teachings in the interim, and are well-documented among those writings of our latter-day scholar, and esteemed Saint, Hugh Nibley.

This book is a compilation of quotes from obscure and not-so-obscure sources, compiled logically and brilliantly by an author who refuses to engage in commentary so that he/she might preserve the integrity of the words as they stand on their own. Each reader is able to, even invited to, explore the doctrines presented at the level at which they are comfortable. This isn't a book that you can read once and expect to comprehend the breadth and depth and grand scale of the nature of God. It will require several readings, and much prayer. But the journey is well worth it. I personally believe these are some of the great and precious truths that have been taken from us. If the sealed plates, and other forthcoming records contain even a fraction of the gems found within this volume, I pray that the day they are made available to us is very soon.

This book is not for the casual student, or one who expects to have a passive seat as a learner. Each concept that I learned opened up a tenfold increase in the questions which came into my mind, many of which were answered as I continued throughout the pages, and many that were not - but have been answered through prayer or revelation. I still have more questions. But this book has done what the quote on the back suggests from Joseph Smith - given us a coherent framework with which to ponder upon the plan of salvation. Truly, it is heaven's best gift to mankind.

Our temple ordinances speak of eternal lives, yet never before have I understood its great importance to our journey during mortality. I find the contents of this book--which are unaltered words of God himself and His prophets--to be the most liberating, invigorating, and motivating doctrine that I have ever comprehended.

Again, it will take some work. But if you truly seek to understand the nature of God (and consequentially yourself in the process), this book is required reading. I am grateful the author had the courage and dedication it must have taken to compile this incredible, well-organized set of quotes. It is a most treasured book in my collection. Well done!

Interesting perspective on an ancient issue

What the prior reviewers fail to disclose ( probably intentionally) is the true thesis of this book. That thesis is that an integral part of the Plan of Salvation in Mormonism is the Doctrine of Eternal Lives by which the compiler of this volume means a "Mormon" variation of what might be called reincarnation. This is more accurately known as "multiple mortal probations". That is after death we may ,if we wish, return to mortality to learn the lessons we yet need to know to more fully achieve our ultimate divine potential.There is virtually no commentary or text other than quotes of generally recognized early church members or leaders. The material is arranged topically but in a manner so as to be very readable. It is edited in such a way as to clearly set forth the compiler's own conclusions even if those conclusions are never expressly articulated. I find it a valuable compilation of first hand material on an arcane subject.

Throughout the nineteenth century, the gardens were maintained, restored and replanted, and today they are being further restored to their original state, reflecting the most significant contributions made by each of the preceding periods. More than two hundred reproductions, plans, drawings, paintings and engravings, as well as colour photographs of the existing gardens, illustrate this book. Each is accompanied by a short explanation that encourages the reader to relive the centuries that reflect the gardens.

GARDENS OF THE SUN KING

Versailles is as famous for Le Norte's gardens are they are for Mansarts palace to end all palaces. This is very good book on these beautiful gardens, the images jump off the page and the text is highly informative. Louis XIV, spent so much time ruminating over these gardens with his great landscape architect Le Notre, that he himself wrote a guide to the gardens, it has been said that Louis was always more pleased with the gardens than he ever was with the palace. Though the gardens of Versailles are spectacular, if you ever visit the Ile of France, be sure to see Le Notre's masterwork at Vieux le Vicomte, now that's perfection personified..it was so spectacular that the King had the owner Fouquet imprisoned, his property confiscated, and had Le Notre leave Vieux le Vicomte and start work immediately on his palace at Versailles, even today Vieux le Vicomte is unfinished.
