Burton is a fine economist who can write well. I have use the book as reference in my own work. The tea party reaction to the events is just reactionary and the bail out was never understood so when history clears the air Burton's account will survive as a fine account of the events.

About the Author

Mandip S. Kang, MD, FASN, received his fellowship in nephrology from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina. In addition to being board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology, he has taught at medical schools since 1996. Currently, Dr. Kang is a Managing Partner at the Southwest Kidney Institute located in Glendale, Arizona. He was selected as the Top Doc in his specialty by Phoenix Magazine.

In the United States today, it has been estimated that 26 million adults have chronic kidney disease, and millions of others are at increased risk due to rising rates of the two most common causes of CKD―hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes. It is not surprising, then, that kidney disease has been classified as an epidemic. While people diagnosed with CKD need to know that it is considered a lifelong condition, they also need to know that this disorder is absolutely manageable. Underlying causes can be addressed, and a healthier lifestyle can be adopted with an eye toward slowing the progression of the disease. My years as a nephrologist (kidney doctor) have shown me that, whether you’re treating CKD alone or juggling the management of several health conditions, diet is a significant part of your treatment plan. By following the diet that meets your needs, you can keep your body’s fluid and chemical levels in better balance, improving the chance of stabilizing your kidney function and enhancing your overall health. That is why I wrote The Doctor’s Kidney Diets―to guide you in understanding and following a kidney-friendly eating plan so that you can enjoy the greatest health possible.

When someone is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, kidney specialists and nutritionists emphasize the importance of diet to prevent the worsening of the disease, and to avoid the symptoms and complications that can develop due to this lifelong problem. Too often, though, patients find the information given to them inadequate or confusing, especially when several different disorders are involved, each with its own dietary limitations. The purpose of this book is to fill that information gap and empower you to improve your health through the foods you eat and the lifestyle changes you make. The facts and recommendations found in this book have been culled from scientific studies, from the expertise of a panel of nutritionists, and―perhaps most important―from years spent treating thousands of people with kidney disease.

Part One of this book focuses on the kidneys―both their function and their dysfunction―and on the importance of diet in the treatment of CKD. It lays the groundwork of information you need to manage chronic kidney disease.

Chapter 1 reviews the vital tasks performed by the kidneys. This information is important because the goal of CKD treatment includes―although it is not limited to―compensating for the tasks that your kidneys can no longer perform. Understanding kidney function is basic to understanding the management of kidney disease.

Once you’ve learned about the work performed by the kidneys, you’ll be ready to learn what happens when the kidneys are less able to do their job. Chapter 2 focuses on the nature, causes, and stages of chronic kidney disease. It also introduces you to your essential role as a member of your own healthcare team.

In Chapter 3, the spotlight is on nutrition. Which nutrients may have to be limited in your diet, and why? Which foods can cause further kidney damage, and which can actually help you safeguard kidney function? Chapter 3 lays out the facts and also explores important topics such as using vitamin-minerals supplements, choosing healthy beverages, dining out, and more.

Many people think that there is only one “renal diet”―one eating plan that is right for everyone with CKD. The truth is that, depending on the stage of CKD, any concurrent medical conditions, and other factors, your doctor may recommend one of several diets, or may combine two or more diets to meet your special needs. Chapter 4 not only explains the diets that are most commonly prescribed for people with CKD, but also provides valuable tips for successfully using each plan to manage your health.

Dietary changes are of crucial importance to everyone with CKD, but beyond diet, there is much you can do to manage your CKD. Chapter 5 focuses on the many healthy lifestyle changes you can make, from getting regular exercise to limiting the use of alcohol and caffeine. Some of these changes may be easy to implement, and some may prove more challenging, but all can make a positive difference in the way you feel on a daily basis as well as in your long-term health.

Although it’s important to understand the “whys” of making smart food choices, I know that dietary principles alone won’t help you feel better. You need to put those principles into practice by making and enjoying kidney-friendly dishes. That’s why Part Two of The Doctor’s Kidney Diets offers over fifty dietitian-created recipes designed specifically for people with CKD. From breakfasts to desserts, from side dishes to snacks, these dishes are not only easy to follow but also easy to love. Each one starts by listing the specific diets with which they are a good match and ends by listing Nutritional Facts, including calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. You’ll even find the Diabetic Exchanges per portion. This takes the guesswork out of finding appealing dishes that match your dietary needs and restrictions. Keep in mind, though, that all dietary decisions should be made under the guidance of your healthcare team. I urge you to share these recipes with your doctor and dietitian so that you can determine together how the dishes can be incorporated into your menu plan.

I’ve tried to make the information in this book easy to understand and to keep my use of medical terminology to a minimum. But some special terms are necessary to explain kidney function, kidney disease, and nutrition. With this in mind, I’ve created a Glossary (page 171) that explains the terms used in this book as well as the terms you’re likely to hear when working with your healthcare team. Turn to it whenever you want to double-check the meaning of a health-related word or phrase.

Throughout this book, I emphasize the importance of understanding your condition and its treatment. My experience has been that knowledge and active involvement in your healthcare plan are the keys to a good outcome. This book provides a great start, but you’ll want to keep adding to your knowledge. That’s why I have compiled a comprehensive Resources list (see page 183), which guides you to solid sources of information on kidney-friendly diets, specific foods and nutrients, laboratory tests, and other aspects of CKD treatment, as well as treatment for related conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. The websites and organizations listed in the Resources section can provide you with the information you need to begin the successful management of your condition and to face any new challenges you may encounter along the way.

In my practice, I have seen my patients reap the benefits of dietary and lifestyle changes―as well as patient education regarding the disease process―and these benefits have often been significant. In many individuals, kidney function has stabilized; in others, the time from diagnosis to dialysis has been greatly prolonged. This is an incredibly helpful, empowering guidebook that combines crucial background information with a definitive dietary approach to managing kidney disease. Written in a manner that's straightforward and easy to understand, this book will enable anyone facing the potential for, or diagnosis of, CKD to learn from Dr. Kang's expertise and take control of their health. The book explains the particulars of kidney function, kidney disease, and related health conditions and teaches why and how to assess the quality of the foods and nutrients in your diet. It offers key advice about healthful lifestyle changes and provides an extensive Resources section.A wonderful addition is the book's Recipe section, created by dietitians and presenting simple instructions, dietary and nutritional facts, and diabetic exchanges for a collection of healthy, delicious dishes. This book may have been written for people with or at risk of kidney disease, but it's a vital resource for anyone who wants to safeguard their health.

and what I can do better to continue to have good reports

I have been a patient of Dr. Kang's for a number of years. I am very excited about his new book. I am looking forward to reading more about my condition, and what I can do better to continue to have good reports. Dr. Kang is an excellent, caring doctor, and I recommend this book to anyone with kidney disease, or even those who just want to keep their kidneys in good shape so they won't need a doctor. I know before I was referred to Dr. Kang I ate too many foods (many processed meals) with too much sodium and potassium, and now I know I have to watch my intake very carefully. I'm anxious to try the recipes he's included. When I see him again next February I hope my kidney function number will be the highest yet. Thank you Dr. Kang!

I recently purchased Dr. Kang's book. A must have book for anyone with Kidney Disease. It is easily understood and has easy to make recipes for all meals. This book educates you on eating the right food so this disease does not iprogress any further. It is important to be aware of foods that should be avoided Dr. Kang thourgly covers every aspect a lay person needs to know about this diease.

horrible editing ruined this book

Here's the good: the characters and story line, for the first couple of chapters, were intriguing and worth reading.

Here's the bad: the editing is AWFUL. I mean, terrible. Words missing in sentences. Using "this" instead of "that." Incorrect pronouns (like using "he" instead of "I"--very confusing!). Misplaced quotation marks. Incorrect use of "'s". Missing periods. Without even trying, I counted 11 mistakes in the first 2 chapters. After that, I couldn't deal with it any more and deleted the book.

If the book gets cleaned up, I suspect it could be worth 4 stars. Until then, it's unreadable.

This book would have been so much better

if not for the horrendous editing or lack thereof. I usually try to ignore the editing but this was so awful, not only was it a distraction, it made it really confusing to figure out what he was saying. At one point, half a chapter was repeated. I thought something was wrong with my Kindle. If the editing is ever cleaned up, the book deserves at least four stars but not in its current state.

Could use some editting

As other reviewers have said this books editing really needs some work. It has only a few typos that I can remembers off hand but there were quite a few missing words and the formatting was a mess in general.

Another reviewer mentioned that Caine talks about breasts a lot. This is fairly true. A good way to think of Caine is that he does not really have a filter, he does and says what he wants to for the most part. The vast majority of other characters in the book are women and seemingly all are attractive and all have something for the protag. If you are looking for deep and interesting characters you wont really get it here. The story is also fairly straightforward.

Sub par characters, bad editing and yet I still enjoyed the read. Caine is a fun guy to read. A lot of the comments about women get old after awhile as does his overall attitude but he has a brazen confidence or even cockiness that I enjoyed. I'm pretty sure ill pick up book 2 but don't hold me to that, the thoughts of how bad the editing could be in a new release kind of scares me to be honest.

About the Author

Herman Melville (1819–1891) found early success with stories inspired by his adventures in the South Seas. His fortunes declined with the 1851 publication of Moby-Dick, now recognized as a masterpiece but scorned by Melville’s contemporaries. The author was obliged to work as a New York City customs inspector and died in obscurity, three decades before the critical reassessment of his work.

Bartleby: A case study in clinical depression

Bartleby is the story of a classic (though in those days undiagnosed, of course) case of what we now call "clinical depression." His symptoms--especially his utter passivity and his complete indifference to his own fate to the point of paralysis and eventual death from starvation--fit the textbook definition of the disorder down to the last detail. And of course, when the reader discovers at the very end of the story that Bartleby had lost his previous job, we have the final piece to the puzzle--the likely catalyst for his mental illness. Unfortunately, cases like this happen all the time in real life.
This is a superbly well-written but very disturbing--even haunting--story that will send a shudder of recognition through anyone who has ever known a victim of this crippling psychological disorder.

Bartleby , the Underground Man, The Overcoat

This review is of one of the long stories, or novellas that constitute this volume, 'Bartleby, the Scrivener' , and not of ' Benito Cereno'. 'Bartleby'is one of the great pieces of American and of Existensial Literature. It's hero, ' Who prefers not to' in some way compares with those other lonely nineteenth century city-dweller isolatos, Dostoevsky's Underground Man, and Gogol's Akakay Akakayevitch. He too has a cousin in much of Kafka's literature perhaps most especially in 'The Metamorphosis'.

The good- natured lawyer narrator, the employer of Bartleby who tells the story would seem to come from a world of ordinary pleasures, family and understanding. Thus his amazement at the worldless Bartleby who cannot say 'yes' to anything even kindness or human consideration.

Bartleby says ' no' and in saying ' no' he somewhow hangs on to, and affirms his own distinct identity and individuality. He is in one sense the anti- hero whose integrity is simply in refusing to follow and obey convention and the ordinary temptations of mankind.

At the same time he is obviously a no-body and a nothing, one who by saying 'no' also denies his own common humanity.

One of the paradoxes of this great story is the somewhat majestic , humorous and ironic tone of the narrator who so calmly presents a tale of isolation bordering on horror.

Close to one- hundred years later a writer far more popular in his time than Melville managed to be in his , J.D. Salinger would present in Holden Caulfield another example of the American naysayer to Society's demands, and hypocrisies. Old Holden however as opposed to Bartleby will be ' quite articulate'. When he prefers not to he will tell us all about it. Enigmatic Bartleby on the other hand charms us by his silence, and his one- track refusal to compromise. He seems to say to us , that even if we think we understand him, we cannot.

And this too is part of this work's special mystery and power.
