good introduction to mathematical statistics

I purchased this book to supplement the textbook (Introduction to Probability and Mathematical Statistics, Bain & EngelHardt) used in a mathematical statistics course. Panik's book provides theory, but it also spends a lot of time explaining what the theory actually means. At times he also provides a list of observations about the topic discussed in that section. There are more topics covered than what I have seen in undergraduate mathematical statistics books, but not always in the depth (i.e., difficulty) presented in Bain & EngelHardt. If your understanding of statistics is at the level discussed in Statistical Inference (Casella & Berger), then you will find Panik's book to be too wordy. In order of difficulty, from easiest to hardest, I would rank these three books as Panik, Bain & EngelHardt, and Casella & Berger.

In August 1972 Polish colonel Ryszard Kuklinski, frustrated by the Soviet domination of his country, took a dramatic step that endangered his own life and the security of his family. He contacted the American Embassy in Bonn and arranged a secret meeting. Over the next nine years, Kuklinski rose quickly in the Polish defense ministry, helping to prepare for a "hot war" with the West. But he also lived a double life of subterfuge-of dead drops, messages written in invisible ink, miniature cameras, and secret transmitters. In 1981, he gave the CIA the secret plans to crush Solidarity. Then, about to be discovered, he made a dangerous escape with his family to the West.

Highly placed in the military councils of the Warsaw Pact, Polish colonel Ryszard Kuklinski made himself the CIA's most important East Bloc intelligence asset in the 1970s, passing along invaluable information about Soviet weaponry, military plans and the brewing crackdown on Poland's dissident Solidarity movement. In this absorbing biography of an emblematic Cold War figure, journalist Weiser paints Kuklinski as a Polish patriot, his pro-American sentiments motivated by love of freedom, resentment of Soviet domination, and fear that a superpower confrontation would unleash a nuclear holocaust on Poland. At times Weiser goes overboard in establishing the point, reprinting at inordinate length Kuklinski's high-minded letters to his CIA handlers and their equally gushing tributes to his idealism and strength of character (the question of how much money the CIA paid Kuklinski is somewhat coyly skirted). But he gives a wonderful account of the daily routine of espionage, full of the theory and practice of counter-surveillance, dead drops, surreptitious hand-offs, suicide pills, invisible ink and (often balky) miniature transmitters, and moments of panic when Kuklinski narrowly escapes detection. Weiser also offers an unusually intimate portrait of the inner life of a spy and the intense emotional bond between agents and their handlers (after his case officer was transferred, the CIA continued to forge letters to Kuklinski over his signature to avoid upsetting their prize asset). Both a gripping spycraft procedural and a study of the moral tension of simultaneously collaborating with and undermining a system one detests, the book sheds light on a shadowy but evocative aspect of life under Communism.

Books about espionage, fiction or not, can be cliché flypaper—encrusted with tired plot twists and morbid atmosphere. Exceptions, like John le Carré's novels and Thomas Powers's histories, are rare. But Weiser's tale of how a high-ranking Polish officer, Ryszard Kuklinski, betrayed the communist leadership for almost a decade, starting in 1972, and fed the Americans thousands of pages of top-secret documents, including the plans for martial law, is in that elevated company. "A Secret Life" is thrilling not only in its chronicle of an honorable betrayal during the Cold War's endgame but also in its portrait of the strangely loving epistolary relationship between the spy and his American handlers. There are scenes here that are as tense as any in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," and the access that Weiser gained—his sources include both Kuklinski and the Poles he fooled—is a feat of patient and intelligent reporting.

Nice account of contemporary history

The book gives a comprehensive account of a Polish officer who played a crucial role in the cold war. The man understands that in case of a Russian attack on Western Europe for which the plans were ready and at his disposal, his own country would be devastated. He would not accept the supreme command of the Russians over the Polish troops in case of conflict and decided to inform the Americans. Nice writing and a good analasys of the moral problem: was he a traitor or a hero? Strangely the reviewers who rate the book low are people who consider the man a traitor. In my opinion the personal answer to the moral question does in no way influence the quality of the book, on the contrary!

What the book also describes painstakingly (and without any criticism) is how a CIA-officer developes what he calls a 'personal relationship' with the Pole, to whom he writes letters. As he is transferred to another section of the service, a colleague starts to write the 'personal letters', imitating the style of the Pole's "American friend". The Pole never finds out and, finding back his friend years later, considers him a real friend and the American apparently too. I found this a repelling example of ignoring the meaning of friendship, of a personality made out of plastic, but of course that does in no way hurt the quality of the book.

The amazing story of Colonel Kuklinski and his work on behalf of the free world and America, resulted in many laudatory comments, but also an outrageous condemnation from pro-Communist sources. The understanding of this scurrilious attack will be helped by the recollection that our gallant ally, Poland, was abandoned at Yalta to the Soviet occupation, which lasted 46 years. During this time, some Poles were seduced, or bribed, to serve their Soviet masters and their interests. When the general discontent by the majority of the people, led by Solidarity, brought about the downfall of the Communist masters and their stooges, they naturally felt hate for the freedom-seeking patriots.
The kangaroo Communist court sentenced Colonel Kuklinski to death just like they condemned so many patriots, and even the anti-German resistance fighters. To most Poles, Colonel Kuklinski is a hero and the cities of Krakow and Gdansk made him an honorary citizen. The regime henchmen could not reach the colonel but his two sons met with sudden death in suspicious circumstances in America. So he paid the highest price for his efforts on behalf of the free world and Poland.

The truth makes you free

This is a book that everyone should read, especially if you have polish roots. I was just wondering if CIA has done enough to provide the security for Kuklinski's family, I think it should be done more... All though this book answered a lot of my questions and daunts, my 14 year old son is reading it now and gives me a great pleasure to explain him those dark days of Poland and brave Polish freedom fighters. Absolutely recommend this book for every patriot.

Good intro book on Bats

I bought this book because I've started studying bats and it was recommended by friends who are studying bats for their graduate studies. The book provides a nice introduction on bats. The book is fairly non-technical and should help me jump into more technical books and the primary literature. The book would accessible to undergraduates and intro-level graduate students.

About the Author

Steve Chader contributed to both The Millionaire Real Estate Agent and The Millionaire Real Estate Investor. He has been investing in real estate since the 1970s with his father and grandfather as his first partners. Since then, Steve' has partnered with Jennice Doty to build a thriving real estate investment business with both residential and commercial income properties.
Jennice Doty, co-author of HOLD, has been in the real estate industry since 1979. Together with investment partner Steve Chader, Jennice has built a successful career, providing management services for more than 1,000 residential homes and 35 commercial properties.
Launching a longstanding career in real estate investing was not what Jim McKissack, HOLD co-author, had in mind when he and Linda―his wife and investment partner―bought their first investment property in 1991. The first investment was far from successful, but taught them many lessons, which they used to make the property cash flow. Today, Jim and Linda head a real estate enterprise that encompasses 79 single-family homes, 6 commercial buildings, 2 multifamily structures, 6 vacation rental cabins and 5 real estate franchises spanning three states, all with an annual cash flow of more than $1 million.
Linda McKissack is a Realtor, entrepreneur, author, and public speaker who began her real estate career in the 1980s. Linda has built a successful team, which includes her husband Jim, that has sold more than $40 million in volume. The HOLD co-author has also made a career of helping others by sharing her successes in order for them to increase their revenue and grow their businesses.

A lot of book for so little information.

This is one of many books that is about real estate investing. Although well written it is not jam-packed with information. So many times successful authors really connect with a great book, then they do a follow up book hoping to have repeat success. This book is one of those types of books The author takes a short subject and stretches it into a book. In fact, I believe this is one of three books in this series. This book uses a lot of paper to give you a little bit of information. Here is the book in a nutshell...You make money when you buy property not when you sell it... So hold it!

This book is simple and something you can implement immediately. Most investment books give you a PHD but you never implement it, so what good is that. Implementation is 80% of the challenge especially with investing. It's easy to follow and understand from the investor who is starting today for the first time, to the sophisticated investor of many years. You don't need all the bells and whistles you need something simple and something that you can use and implement right NOW. I've been an investor for 30 years and a Broker/Agent and this is the E-ticket for investing in Real Estate. It's something you can wrap your head around immediately. You can tell the people who wrote this book have done it themselves and they’re not just talking about it to sell books. That’s very refreshing to see in today's world of Real Estate investing.

Great book for the library

If you are interested in this kind of real estate investment than this book is great. I would not call it all encompassing though, it is definitely lacking in some areas, but it still has great tips and information for beginners. I would say it focus more on the financial side then the day to day practices, but it does explain the financial really well. Like I said add it to the library but don't rely solely on it.

I ordered this product and selected brand new. The book I received did not look brand new...it had smudges on the front cover and on the back of the book, there was a sticker w/ the name of the seller which covered a torn portion of the back cover. I got this book as a textbook...I found out one of my classmates ordered a used book and it looked more brand new than mine. I was really disappointed :(

Good Intro Text

I used this textbook for a 300-level introduction to Environmental Engineering. The text is well written, with a strong and personable narrative, and explains the vast majority of the topics in a clear and accessible manner. Technical jargon is kept to a minimum, and this text could easily be read by a non-engineer. The text covers Water and Wastewater chemistry and treatment, water pollution and control, air pollution and control, solid waste treatment and disposal, and risk and risk management, as well as providing a solid background in the requisite chemistry and mathematics. College-level mathematics, including basic calculus, are included, although the textbook could be used in a non-calculus course without loosing any real continuity or coverage, by eliminating some derivations and a very few formulae. A basic college-level chemistry background is also extremely beneficial for Chapters 2 and 5 (Chemistry and Water topics).

However, the provided exercises appear to have been written for an earlier edition and not updated, as the sequence and phraseology differs from that of the text, which led to confusion on a few occasions. Also, no solutions are provided in the back of the book and no student solutions manual is available, which makes study from the text difficult. The text also covers far more material than can reasonably be covered in a one-semester course, so coverage and continuity is in large part up to the instructor's planning and topic selection.

All in all, I found this book to provide a broad, clear, and succinct introduction to environmental engineering. It was easy to read and stimulated interest in the various fields covered, and provides enough depth to make it a useful reference later on (I elected not to sell it back and use it as such, to much benefit in upper-level courses). Hence, I would strongly recommend this text for a sophomore or junior-level introduction to environmental engineers, and to students in such a course or looking to learn more about the field.

A Good Survey Text

I found this to be a great survey text for environmental engineering. I purchased it for my intro class and it served as a good reference for basic math and chemistry needed for my classes. I found that it explained the general chemistry (e.g. ammonia striping, carbonate chemistry, and acid-base chemistry) more clear and with better examples that my higher level texts. It gives a good foundation and basis for further study, but, again, it is definitely and intro level text and not recommended for anything higher than a 300-level course.

This book is easy to get through and explains the equations that you need well. I'm using it for a class right now, but it is a great intro book for environmental engineering.
