In this gritty, touching story about Copper Daniels, a tough as nails, no-nonsense street kid in search of her missing mother, Marcy McKay delivers a book readers will find difficult to put down. Her poignant storytelling makes it equally hard to forget long-past the end of the story.

Being homeless isn't a piece of cake for anyone, but life is especially difficult for Copper and her flighty, troubled mother. By day they rely on the kind donations of strangers as they stand at the intersection in front of Burger Heaven restaurant, but as the day wears on Copper often ends up in knots from her mother's methods of getting by in the world on her own terms. Despite her mama's seemingly selfish choices, she always tries to make sure they have a safe place to sleep each night, even if 99 percent of the time it is beneath the statue of the Warrior Angel at the Eternal Peace cemetery. Copper finds some comfort there, tucked in among the Somebodies and the Nobodies, where beneath each headstone lies a story. At least until the morning she awakens to discover the mother that never leaves her side is missing.

The action is non stop from there as we follow Copper and her search for her mother through a world full of colorful and unique characters in a vivid and sometimes dark setting. McKay's ability to deliver suspense and tug at your heartstrings throughout is top-notch. The strong voice of this author commands a reader's attention.

Definitely a keeper.

I was hooked after the first two pages!

I was hooked after the first two pages of the book. After the first chapter, any thought of putting the book down were forgotten. Pennies from Burger Heaven made me see the streets and the people who live there through Copper’s eyes – they eyes of a girl that were both innocent and street weary at the same time. I loved getting that glimpse into her world and was fascinated by the life that she seemed to accept as normal. She had a real tenacity and strength that you wouldn’t expect from an eleven-year-old and the unique way she saw life and the people around her made this book an unforgettable story. The ending totally surprised me, and I never expected it to play out the way it did or for the story to leave me in tears.

Highly recommend you read this book now. Since it says that it’s Burger Heaven #1, I can only hope there will be another story soon.

Well-paced and Descriptive

Copper Daniels, an eleven-year old lives in a world few of us understand; that of homelessness and extreme poverty. To survive, she and her mother must overcome daily battles with hunger, inclement weather and, shall we say, less than exemplary people.

The story, written from the youngster’s perspective, is complete with a child’s view of the world, her own made-up names for people and places as well as her reality. When her mother becomes one of the “Disappeared” Copper sets out on a journey of discovery that exposes both friend and foe. Her only thought being, “The best I can hope for is to find Mama before Diablo does.”

From her home near the Warrior Angel statue in the Eternal Peace cemetery to the harrowing streets of “Paradise” the narrative of her encounters is well-paced and descriptive. To her dismay, she comes to the conclusion that, as she puts it, “Caring turns people in a Disappeared.”

The story is rife with unexpected twists and turns. The culmination of events came as a surprise to this reader, making it exciting to uncover.

I am unaware of author Marcy McKay’s background, but she has created a world in “Pennies from Burger Heaven” that is palpable and believable. One can feel the despair. The characters are well developed. Each scene comes alive with visceral acuity. I recommend “Pennies from Burger Heaven.”

Tear Down The Prison Walls!

For far too long, the right-wing gay establishment has been collaborating with law enforcement and the FBI, supporting the profit-driven prison industrial complex instead of fighting for prison abolition. In this short but thought-provoking anthology of essays by radical queer and transgender activists, the sacred cow issue of hate crime legislation is tackled, showing how it fails to address the actual causes of homophobic and transphobic violence, while simultaneously incarcerating massive numbers of impoverished people, people of color, and sexual minorities. Needless to say, given the constant state violence perpetrated against LGBT people, particularly though not exclusively against transgender women of color, homeless LGBT youth, and sex workers, it is absurd to entrust the police with our protection. Instead, we should be building better, community-based solutions to end all forms of violence. The final book in the Against Equality trilogy challenging the mainstream LGBT movement's conservative agenda of gay marriage, gays in the military, and hate crime legislation, this is a great and extremely important book.

For a more in-depth exploration of this issue, I also strongly recommend reading, "Captive Genders: Trans Empowerment And The Prison Industrial Complex" edited by Eric A. Stanley and Nat Smith and published by AK Press.

I didn't expect much from a book with such a cutesy cover and slightly longer than a Hallmark card. But the book put language to my intuition that "enhanced" sentences were a bad thing. I think my intuition was about too many people being in prison for too long already and really, what is it that makes us think that by locking someone up, we're going to fix the problem?
I read the book a couple years ago and then it apparently and unfortunately went out of print. But it made a big impact on my view of our criminal/justice system. First of all, the very people hate crimes is trying to protect (because they are disliked in our general population) are the same ones that are going to end up in prison because we don't like them: LGBTQ people, people of color and people with "weird" religions (not really my description).
If you care about justice, please get this book--it will give you the language to help stop this irrational idea that "we just lock them up and throw away the key" is a remedy for anything. Like slave owners, jailers live in a spiritually bankrupt world--both the jailed and the jailer are damaged in this relationship. And remember, the jailers live with us.

Funny & Amusing

Read two versions of the book in Kindle, but didn't see any drawings except for the book cover & one Chinaman. Well- written except for one sentence (don't know if it was a typographical error or not) that I thought was grammatically awkward. For those who find humor in wild & funny ideas, this book is for you. Unfortunately, I am more of a "mystery," "biography," "documentary" & "research-report" kind of person. The author writes true to her type - funny & talented. The book is easy to read & for light-reading, so enjoy it.

I loved the AY Collins ability to find humor in so many crazy situations. Her ability to illustrate and inject humor into a variety of topics amazes me. Definitely made me think about other funny topics for her blog and next book. I look forward to following her work and reading her next book.

He completed half of his military career as an enlisted soldier and the remainder as a commissioned officer until retiring as a captain at the end of an exciting career. While serving in the Army, CPT Lewis helped many other soldiers progress through the ranks and discover their full potential. This book represents his ongoing commitment to help every soldier become the best they can be while serving in the military. Lewis lives in Fort Myers, Florida.
