Excellent book...buy this one first

I'm always a bit suspicious of the "Dummies" and "Idiots" books, as many of them really short on information. But this book is really full of information about how to get started in ham radio. It is well organized and well written. One note: this has very little detail about how to pick out your first radio; plenty of general information, but it is not a product selection guide. But if you read it, you will realize, as the author recommends, that the best way to buy a radio is to make some friends in the ham radio community and get some help picking out equipment. But I can't recommend this book enough....really helpful.

It's like a mentor in book form!

The author is a well-known radio amateur who writes a regular column in QST, the largest ham radio magazine. In this book he gives a broad overview of the hobby, introducing the newcomer to its many facets. It takes the reader through the process of earning a ham license, then shows the new ham what he can do with that license. I plan to buy a copy for each graduate of our radio club's licensing course. The new edition of the book (August, 2013) updates all the information in the original. Outstanding book for anyone with an interest in amateur radio.

A broad overview of everything HAM can do, not enough detail to learn much

My goals with this book were twofold, picking up knowledge helping me get licensed, and picking up skills to actually operate the gear.

The book has a general overview of everything HAM can do. It's not pretty deep on actual details. For someone new to the subject, it actually was kind of surreal. Photos of 1970 automotive dashboard, CRT monitors, moving TO 9600 bps rates.

There's also a lot of general life advice like searching the internet or to be early for meetings. I wasn't sure if the author understood the "for dummies" was a tongue-in-cheeks concept. At any rate, this is advice not specific to HAM radio.

There's a lot of detail on how to get licensed. Disappointingly, it's all about the process of getting licensed, not the skills or knowledge to get licensed.

There's extensive information about building your own antenna, how to organize a computer desk and multiple stationary radios, and designing your own room dedicated to HAM radio. Once again, in a for dummies book, is that going to be of interest to someone new to the subject?

In summary, somewhat entertaining overview of everything you can do with a HAM radio that you'll want to read front to back. I wished I had gotten a book focusing more on the beginner and teaching hands-on skills.

A book to think about...

This book isn't really a sequel to the other 2 books in this series. The main character is not featured in book 2, and the only character from book 2, is Gwen Carson, who had a small part in book 2. That being said, I thought this book was great. Jillian takes over for her twin, Judith, at her job in an Arizona Harvey Restaurant. The novel follows her as she struggles to find her faith, and to reconcile her love and respect for her parents with her growing sense of independence. She also seeks to find her place in the world.
Ms. Peterson is able to bring to live the struggle between the white man and the Indians in the late 1800s. By using Jillian to act as conscience for the community, she allows Jillian to point to people in the community as hypocrites. I saw this role as extremely important in the book. By the time the showdown between the town and Jillian arrives, I was ready for someone to take a stand.
I would heartily recommend this book to anyone. You don't even have to read the other 2 books first.

Compelling intrigue, romance and living with deceipt!

A Veiled Reflection is the third book in the series about the Harvey House girls and this one is superb! Jillian agrees to pretend to be her twin sister, Judith and this starts her life in Arizona off on the wrong foot - that of living in deceipt. She obviously has trouble performing like her trained sister and runs into a few people who know the difference. When she falls in love, she is sure it is one-sided. The man she loves has a secret past and refuses to love again. The Navajo Indians are represented in this book and are loved and ministered to by one old lady, Mary. Prejudice and hatred show their ugly faces even between civilized white people who think they are Christians. A few refuse to be drug into the garbage and end up being forced to take a stand. This is excellent reading, good for making some religious and political stands, and romantically it is suberb!

About the Author
Mark Speck has been researching pro football for over 25 years. He has written numerous articles for the Professional Football Researchers Association's publication, The Coffin Corner, and has contributed his time and efforts to several football encyclopedias and the official WFL website. He has also worked as co-author of The World Football League ncyclopedia with Tod Maher and is the author of a book on the 1974 Florida Blazers entitled "
...and a dollar short". When he is not researching pro football, Mark works full-time as a Quality Assurance Specialist for the nonprofit organization Able2 in Elmira, New York. Mark lives in Horseheads, New York, with is still very understanding and patient wife, Elise, and their Pug.

the editor wiffed on Wiffle

This is a "qualified" five-star project edited in a three-star way hence I'm giving it a four. Let me clarify a bit. The research is top notch. The main problem is the decision rather than let the two seasons flow as a whole, the author covers each World Football League season then does a team-by-team season review. Although these are interesting with two teams playing in a game (well, duh!), you get, for example the author just repeating himself way too much. In other words, if we take the chapter of the 1974 Birmingham Americans and he's discussing a game vs. the Chicago Fire. Then in the 1974 Chicago Fire chapter that same game will be covered. It...makes...no...sense to do the book this way.

Even worse is he has all the team's chapters in alphabetical order, you, for instance, start reading about the 1974 Charlotte Hornets and quickly realize you had better skip ahead and read about the 1974 New York Stars first because that's where the franchise started playing the season. After they bailed on NYC they move to Charlotte.

Throw in the fact that this is a hardcover book and its cost, why no pictures? There are none. I kid you not. Not even middle-page spread on one of the most colorful leagues ever thought up.

Anyway mindboggling because the quality of the writing is there at times although I grew so bored with it that it became a slog to get through each team's soul sucking seasons. The author does, in a good way, suck you into some of the great characters from players to coaches to wacky owners. This book just needed a serious editor to steer author Mark Speck to organize the book a bit more logically than what I think he must think is logical.

This book is a fantastic record of a league with an incredible story. This should be required reading for any Sports Management class as an example of how not to run a league. Had I not been in my early 20s during this era I would have a hard time believing all that took place during this leagues existence. Hopefully somebody will someday produce a similar book about the USFL.
