Bent (Back to Brooklyn Book 1), by H.B. Heinzer

There’s one thing Julia Wilson has learned in life: you can’t push aside your own dreams for anyone. Newly divorced, Julia returns to the small hometown she swore she’d left forever. She plans on enjoying the cheap rental a friend offers and staying there just long enough to figure out her next steps in life.

But before long, Julia realizes she’s made a big mistake.

A decade ago, Micah Anderson promised Julia forever but broke her heart right before she left for college. Now, Julia’s back in town, and he’s going to have to tell her the truth about why he left her—it’s impossible to hide a twelve-year-old child when you live in such a small town.

Can Julia forgive Micah and start anew? Should she try to make a relationship work if Micah’s past becomes a threat to her safety? Should she follow her dreams if it means giving up on a second chance with her first love?

About the Author

With the exception of three years spent in the middle of Nebraska, H. B. Heinzer has called southern Wisconsin home. Her first “official” writing was as a teenage guest contributor to an APAzine her father contributed to. In spite of her tender years, the other adult members voted her in.

Life intervened for a while, and writing fell by the wayside, but after her first daughter was born, she started a blog, More Than Moms, as a way to vent about her struggle to hold onto her own identity in the midst of motherhood. After that, not even the loss of her first attempt at a full-length novel, which occurred when her hard drive failed, could stop her from her dreams of becoming a writer.

Now, H. B. lives in the middle of nowhere but still close enough to a city to not feel isolated. It's the perfect place to let her two kids run and explore their huge yard, teach them about the food chain as they create a garden, and debate building a chicken coop.

A Little Slow To Find Its Feet, But Well Worth The Read
By Mary L. Valley
Bent is a book about love lost and the pitfalls and work necessary for love to be found again. It is a little slow to get into the real meat of the story, and I did get mild whiplash from the heroine's inability at the first to decide whether she was going to let bygones be bygones and be friends once again with her old flame from high school, or if she'd decided he was lying scum who could just stay away from her. The story could work with either attitude, but I finally just wished she would settle for one or the other and get on with it.

At first the characters interact more like new adults rather than people who are turning 30, but after several chapters, the action picks up and interactions smooth out and the book really grabbed me. The heroine is newly divorced and reluctantly returning to her roots to catch her breath and decide what direction she will go now that, for the first time, her life is her own. There are strong elements of chick-lit in that the book is about a heroine who realizes that all her life, she has never been making decisions only for herself, but always had family, college pressures, or a marriage partner affecting her view of herself and the goals she set for herself. Now she is free and ready to start living for herself.

The somewhat truth-challenged hero is her former love from high school who is living with the consequences of his bad decision making and inability to face it down which cost him the only woman he ever loved. Rather than admit that his actions while drunk resulted in an act of infidelity and an unplanned pregnancy, he told the woman he loved he could not commit to a long distance relationship and that they should part. Now that she is back, he is free, and he is determined to reclaim his love.

For those who don't like books with infidelity, this is your fair warning. The act was in the past, but affects the present in the form of the child resulting from it. This is not a steamy romance, but it does have sexual content so those who like clean romances may want to pass on this book. The action in this book is how the heroine's character develops and reacts to the changes and challenges in her life. I thought the character development on the heroine was realistic and applauded her determination to try her wings before settling back into what has been her familiar pattern. I also loved that she did not go into stasis until her first love re-entered her life, but continued on with living, had relationships, got married and tried to make her life work.

The character interactions got increasingly better and a joy to watch, although I don't think the writer delved deeply enough into the hero who abandoned his first love, but failed to commit to the marriage he settled on and let his unhappiness destroy it. Even his ex-wife who mired herself in drugs and at first tried to sabotage the developing bonds between the protagonists, does a better job at redeeming herself and reclaiming her life than the hero who never addresses his failure in his marriage and his role in it.

Imperfect people make for interesting books and were handled quite well in this one. I would recommend it as a good read with a satisfactory ending and will look for more from this writer.

Second Chance at Love!!
By Becky Loves 2 Read
**ARC provided by author for an honest review**

When Julia left her hometown of Brooklyn 13 years ago, she left with a broken heart and a vow never to return. But life had other plans. When her marriage ends, she goes back home but only plans to stay along enough to get her life back in order. She never counted on reconnecting with Micah or the way he can still makes her feel.

The first night Micah sees Julia again he is floored. She is the last person he ever expected to see again. He quickly realizes he is going to have to come clean as to why he broke her heart all those years ago. He only hopes that she can somehow forgive him. He knows this is his one and only shot at having a second chance with her.

I have to admit, I was a little confused as to how after all these years, not one person had told Julia anything about Micah and what he was going through. The only think I could chalk it up to was the fact maybe they thought she didn't want to hear about him? And then when she did find out, she forgave him rather quickly. Like 3 days quickly, if you know what I mean (wink wink!).

Julia and Micah can't seem to stay away from one another. The more time they spend with each other, the harder it is to fight all those feelings that resurface. It brings to question, do you ever really get over your first love? And if presented with the opportunity to try again with them, would you?

As the story progresses, so does the relationship between Micah and Julia. But it all seems to be too much too fast for Her. And she gets spooked when he makes an off handed comment about parenthood. Julia makes the decision to run. But this time, Micah isn't letting her go without a fight. He had to let her go once and he knows he can't do it again. He is willing to do whatever it takes to make it work. Will that be enough? Well, you are just going to have to read the book to find out!

This book has...
mild heat
lots of angst
some lack of communication
first love
forgiveness
a HEA
And NO CLIFF HANGER!!

All which make for a pretty good read if you ask me! I am looking forward to reading Carly and Adam's story!

Cheating is still wrong, right?
By Reader
I really, really disliked this book...

I especially hated how the H cheating on the h was completely minimized. The H of this story lied to the h about the reason that he abandoned her. At the start of the story he tells her that the real reason for his abandonment was not because she was leaving for college but because he had cheated on her. The h is not angry, sad or even upset by this. Upon hearing the news, the h is indifferent to hearing that the love of her life had betrayed her in such a way then chosen the OW over the h. Then the H informs her that his child was a result of the cheating. This does get some reaction from her. She hated the H all of 12 hours before she is loving the H again and all is well. The infidelity is never an issue. Maybe it's just me but cheating on someone is a HUGE betrayal in a relationship and one that cannot just be swept under the rug. If an author is unable to successfully resolve the issue and create a story that shows the H and h rebuilding a relationship tackling the issues that such a betrayal would bring to people then they should not use this as a plot device. The author does little to deal with the cheating itself. Even when the OW goes into painful detail about the incident, the h still shows little anger or hurt over it. The h and H don't even revisit the issue to resolve the feelings that might have been caused by what the OW said. It was equally annoying to have the h "friend" also always take the H side. This character actually called the h selfish for thinking twice about not taking back a guy that cheated on her which resulted in another woman's child that she would have to raise. Alas, this character had nothing to fear because his infidelity was absolutely no issue for the h. Although the H lying was discussed, the cheating was an equally, if not bigger, betrayal that needed to be addressed and never was.

There were other things that bothered me about this story : the OW assaulting the h, the h constant mood swing that changed paragraph by paragraph, resolving everything with a lot of quick sorrys, the H additional deceit with the OW and how quickly that and everything is forgiven. Despite all the other things I disliked, the glossing over the infidelity was still the most annoying.
