Definitely add this book to your Classic Beer Style Series collection

This book was well written, with great historically details and technical information related to the Lambic beer style. For a book that is over 25 years old, copyright 1990 by Jean-Xavier Guinard, it is still a good source of information on Lambics with more than 99% of the information current. The Kindle version allows those of us that did not purchase this book before it went out-of-print a chance to read this great book.

About the Author
Born and raised in Belgium, Peter Bossaerts received a licentiate and doctorandus degree in applied economics from the University of Antwerp. After coursework towards a Master's in statistics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, he changed to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he finished his PhD in Management (Finance) under Richard Roll. His first appointment as assistant professor was at Carnegie Mellon University's Graduate School of Industrial Administration. Peter Bossaerts is presently the William D Hacker Professor of Economics and Management and Professor of Finance at the California Institute of Technology. He has taught undergraduate, MBA, PhD and executive classes in finance at various places across the world. He is Co-Editor of the Review of Finance, a past associate editor of the Review of Financial Studies, and currently on the board of the Annals of Finance, Mathematical Finance, The Journal of Financial Econometrics, The Journal of Financial Markets, and Foundations and Trends in Economic Theory. While his research has encompassed many areas of theoretical and empirical finance, he is predominantly interested in discovering fundamental principles in the interplay between individual behavior and aggregate phenomena in competitive financial markets. Unlike most finance researchers, he has been using controlled experiments as main inference tool. This work has been awarded two prizes. His experimental work has led him to investigate the neural foundations of perception and choice under uncertainty. Born and raised in Norway, Bernt Arne Odegaard got his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Business Administration at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen, Norway. He went on to doctoral studies at Carnegie Mellon University's Graduate School of Industrial Administration, receiving his PhD in 1992. His thesis paper on estimation of taxes implicit in bond prices, written with Richard C Green, was published in the Journal of Finance. Bernt Arne Odegaard was assistant professor at the Universities of Illinois (Chicago) and British Columbia (Vancouver) before becoming an Associate Professor at the BI Norwegian School of Management in Oslo, Norway, in 1995. Bernt Arne Odegaard's research is predominantly empirical, but has spanned such areas as fixed income, market microstructure, international finance and corporate governance. His research is published in journals like the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Markets and the Journal of International Money and Finance. Bernt Arne Odegaard also holds an advisory position in Norges Bank, the Central Bank of Norway, where he advises on Financial Markets Issues.

About the Author
O. C. Zienkiewicz was one of the early pioneers of the finite element method and is internationally recognized as a leading figure in its development and wide-ranging application. He was awarded numerous honorary degrees, medals and awards over his career, including the Royal Medal of the Royal Society and Commander of the British Empire (CBE). He was a founding author of The Finite Element Method books and developed them through six editions over 40 years up to his death in 2009.

Dana Fear can imagine one hundred other places in the world she'd rather spend the rest of her senior year, but imagining won't change the fate that has come ot her. For Dana Fear is forced to spend the rest of her senior year at Shadyside High, with her cousin Jamie. The Fear name doesn't have a very good reputation in Shadyside, what with all of the evil history told about them, so Dana receives a very strange welcome. People either want to get to know her in an attempt to learn more about the Fear's, or they steer clear of her, treating her like a witch. But then she's invited to join the Night People. Dana realizes now that Shadyside isn't so bad when you're getting a buzz with some of your closest friends at a bar called Nights. That is, until the evil strikes again. Soon, the Night People are being picked off one by one. Dana tries to tell everyone that she's innocent, but all fingers are pointing at her. After all, she is a Fear...

Sequels are rarely better than their predecessors, but in Stine's case, MIDNIGHT GAMES outshines MOONLIGHT SECRETS - if that's even possible. It was a decent book good suspense. It started off as a little slow and got faster then went to slow and boring and confusing. It picked up and got to be faster and easier to understand.

I'm going to show you a little bit of the book to get you a little taste of it.

There were these friends and they heard about this mansion and the family that had lived in the mansion. The family knew all about magic and witchcraft. The wife named Angelica Fear was knew all about witchcraft and had a blue jewel that gave her immortality. So she used it and came back in a body that wasn't hers... It was Jamie's...

One day Dana Fear came into the town for the summer to spend with her family and Dana is related to the Fears and Bad things started happening and they all blamed Dana ....so read the rest of the book to find out what happens......it'll blow your mind.

Fun Sequel

A year has passed since the events in "Moonlight Secrets." The night people are still recovering from the death of one of their own. Jamie's cousin, Dana Fear, arrives in Shadyhigh. Dana is going to finish high school there. And yes, Dana is a descendant of the Fear family.

Dana starts hanging out with the night people - a group of teenagers who hang out at 3a.m.. She befriends Nate, who is still getting over Candy's death in "Moonlight Secrets." Strange events start to occur, and the body count rises. Is Angelic Fear back from the dead?

"Midnight Games" is a fun, fast-paced sequel. There are more screams and scares than the previous installment. It was clever to bring in Dana Fear, as she is connected to Simon and Angelic Fear. I can't wait to read the final book.

Although animation has finally begun to be thought worthy of serious attention, the spate of books on it in recent years has focused primarily on commercial Hollywood animation. Bendazzi ambitiously attempts to fill the gap. He covers more than a century's worth of animation, from the 1888 th{‚}e{ƒ}atre optique (a device for projecting moving painted images that predates motion picture pioneers Edison and Lumi{Š}ere) to today's cutting edge computer-animation technology. He covers American animation, of course, but also describes developments in more than 70 other countries, in many of which animation emerged more as an art form than a box office draw. His work is not without shortcomings: the writing (the translation, anyway) is occasionally awkward, and despite or because of its exhaustive depth and scholarly approach, the text seldom conveys the delightfulness that makes the best cartoons so compelling. Great Documentation of Artistic Animation. Not your average animation history book.

It's clear that the author derives the majority of his references from Europe's history of Animation, which might explain why many people have not heard of the animators he talks about. But considering that these artists did take part in the history behind animation, it is good that Bendazzi made the effort to bring their names to light. He makes some remarks and does look at other countries, such as America's infamous Walt Disney and Japan's rising anime films, but for the most part, he concentrates on the growth within Europe's artistic groups.

This book is less about the big names in cinematic animation and more about the independent artists and studios who worked in animation during a time when the animator's names and the dates their works were created weren't exactly recorded and copyrighted properly. Many of the animators here can also be identified as fine artists, often working experimentally within the media. This is how animation as cinema started (way before the time of Walt Disney and his overshadowing fame) and is continuing to be produced on the other side of Hollywood.

This book definitely has a text-book feel, but as far as a text book goes, it's not too terribly dry. It's informative and gives a very in-depth look at animation, from its beginning as optical illusions to the cinematic phenomena it has become today.

Also, as a final personal comment, this book is like a documentation of the independent films (as well as mainstream films) of the animation industry. Most people will not have seen them (unless they have access to an animation/video library), but that doesn't mean the films aren't important to history.

Better with some revisions.

As a brazilian animator I tried to start to read this book by the Latin american section, and comprehensively, by the one that shows the status of animation in my country, Brazil, a reality that I know very well.I don't know where Mr. Bendazzi got his informations for this part of the book.What I know is that it's full of strange or, at least unknown names of people for most of the brazilian animators, illustrators figuring as animators, besides the absence of five or six of the really most important animators in my country.Because of all that,I'm affraid the rest of the book, at least in those sections telling about the animation in Latin America still needs to be revised.

A excellent resource

I love and I am actually studying animation, and this book is excellent and very interesting, not only for us the animators, but for everyone who likes history. My mother was an professor of History, tells me how interesting is this book every time she takes a look. The book has a enormous resource about the animation, since the first toys that made animation in our eyes while moving it, until actual animation. I admire all those who made animation, because for a short or long animation, of whichever method, we need to be crazy enough to be able to make one! I recommend it to everyone, this book is not only made for studying, it is also entertaining, until the point that I want to carry it everywhere I go and take a little read each time.

The earliest of these were the Punt ships and the war galleys of Egypt which defeated the Sea People in the first known naval battle, along with the contemporary ships of Minoan Crete, the first sea power. Following the fall of these civilisations, the Phoenicians built biremes and other vessels with which they created the first Mediterranean-wide trade empire, while in Greece the ships described in detail in the 'Trojan' epics established a tradition of warship building culminating in the pentekonters and triaconters which allowed the Greeks to compete for hegemony on the seas.
The warships of the period are abundantly illustrated on pottery and carved seals, and depicted in inscriptions and on bas-reliefs. A number of ships have also been excavated, from Egypt to Sicily, along with marine artefacts such as anchors and a bronze ram, while there are numerous finds of armour and weapons of the types used by naval personnel in this era. To this material evidence can be added literature from such disparate sources as Homer, the Old Testament and the Classical world's first historians.
The subject has been intensively studied for two and a half millennia, culminating in the contemporary works of authoritative scholars such as Morrison, Wallinga, Rodgers and Casson. Finally there are a number of modern reconstructions, both virtual and real, which have shed new light on the technology and usage of vessels of this period.
To date there are no works covering this subject which are accessible and available to non-academics. This can only be considered a serious oversight due to the importance of this fascinating period.

With « Warships of the Ancient World 3000-500 BC », Adrian Wood and Guiseppe Rava have managed to come up with a short but valuable overview of warships and naval warfare over a period of some 25 centuries - no mean feat in itself.

I sometimes tend to be quite critical of Osprey's little booklets, especially when the authors are faced with the rather impossible task of cramming several centuries of military history within a few dozen pages (48, 64 or 96, depending upon the collection). Here, however, the effort is very largely successful even if, of course, the book is no more than an introduction and an overview. I liked this book and found it "good" (a subjective assessment, of course, and no more than a personal opinion) for quite a few reasons.

The first has perhaps to do with the author's methods. Unlike a number of fellow-authors writing in the same collection, he mentions upfront that the contents of this book reflect "only one possible interpretation of the information" and refers readers to his bibliography for those wanting to learn about alternative explanations. While this may fall short of presenting these alternatives, it does clearly present the author's choices for what they are: one series of interpretations among a range of possibilities. A related element is that the bibliography that he refers to, while short, does contain the most important titles on the subject or, to be both more modest and more accurate, the ones I was aware of before reading this book, as well as a couple of others which I did not know about!

The second reason for both liking and enjoying this book has to do with its scope - no less than six navies (or even seven if you add in the Etruscans) covered: Egypt, Crete, the Syrian cities during the Bronze Age, the rather mysterious Sea People, the Phoenicians that inherited from them and the Greeks (from the Mycenaeans right down to 500 BC). Despite this, the author manages to show quite clearly how ship types evolved over time, the similarities and differences between the various navies and ship types, the issues they had to address and the various compromises that were struck during the period between speed, robustness and manoeuvrability.

A third reason to praise this book is that the author has clearly done his research and has a good grasp of the technical issues related to shipbuilding, seaworthiness and navigation. He also makes a number of excellent points related to geography and the availability of mineral resources and shipbuilding timber around the Mediterranean which are often passed over, despite their importance. For instance, it is the lack of both in Egypt that made the control of the areas of modern Syria/Lebanon and of Cyprus so critical for Egypt. This was true in the time of Ramses and it stayed true throughout Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

A fourth set of reasons has to do with the pictures and illustrations in general, and those of Guiseppe Rava in particular: great, spectacular and rather gorgeous! They also made me somewhat smile (I am not being sarcastic). The "Homeric Landing" one reminded me of a similar scene at the beginning of Wolfang Petersen's "Troy" (the one with Brad Pitt in the role of Achilles, Eric Bana in the role of Hector and Orlando Bloom in the role of Paris, of course!). I also like the plates that put two types of ships in perspective, allowing for visual comparisons.

I did however have a couple of little glitches to mention. One of the problems in trying to cover half a dozen navies over a period of about 25 centuries is that it is somewhat delicate to include all or at least most of them on the same map. While having the Minoans, the Mycenians, the Egyptians, the Hittites and the Syrian cities (Ugarit in particular) on the same map is fine, adding the Sea People may be a bit problematic in terms of chronology - they may have some responsibility in the fall of the Minoans and certainly were responsible for destroying Ugarit. Having mentioned this, it is easy to see why this choice was made and the chronology of the whole period is just about shaky and controversial enough to allow the author to get away with it.

Another little glitch has to do with a paragraph quoted from Josephus (page 30 in the book), which the author has not bothered to discuss in-depth, probably because he preferred to keep the limited and valuable space that he had for something that he felt to be more important. There are a couple of issues in this paragraph retracing a naval battle between a dozen larger ships from Tyre and sixty ships from other Phoenician cities which were vassals of the Assyrian king of the time. The numbers of rowers provided for the sixty ships (800) is unlikely to have represented all the crew, or perhaps even the total of rowers. The reasons for the victory of the Tyrians are not mentioned, unlike, for instance, the reasons for the victory of the Egyptians of Ramses III over the Sea People or those for the "Cadmean" victory of the Phoceans against the Etrusco-Carthagenian alliance at the Alalia.

Despite it short length is a fairly good introduction

This book is part of the Osprey "New Vanguard" series and, as such, is very short. It is only 48 pages in length. About a third of these consist of illustration of one type of another (i.e., artist's illustrations of battles, photographs of vessels on various art of antiquity [i.e., vases, etc], maps, etc.). Hence the book can only, at most, just touch upon the subject. Thus the relevant question becomes, how well does it do this? The answer is surprisingly well.

The reader gets an idea of how vessels in during this time period were constructed, learns that during nearly this entire period vessels were "dual purpose" in their design and use (i.e., the served for both commerce and war), only towards the end of the period were vessels constructed specially for use as military vessels and tactics used during the period (almost entirely boarding with ramming coming into its own only towards 500 BC when more specialized and maneuverable war vessels were introduced.

All and all a fairly good introduction that just touches the surface of the subject (in 48 pages how much more can it do?) of the topic that can be read in about an hour or so.

An introductory history of ancient warships and naval warfare

Although the title of this review may seem at first sight slightly pejorative, it is far from that feeling I try to transmit. As an introduction to the subject you can't find any better book than this one (IMHO)...and with the vast period covered, limited evidence and enormous geographical scope no one could do more than provide one interpretation to this theme, and wisely the author acknowledges just that.

This book is well thought of so that even the layman can immediately start grasping the contents. One example is the glossary being in the beginning of this work, not in the end. The layman will find all the nautical and shipbuilding terminology needed to understand the text right in the first pages! Other well done feature is that the wall paintings, reliefs and artifacts that the author mentioned in the text, are in fact represented with good photographs that provide a good visual reference.

As for the analysis, the author offers his interpretation. As an example, in the Medinet Habu relief, Egyptian ships are provided with rowers and fighting crew, but the Sea people's vessels have only marines and no rowers! The author believes the Sea peoples rowers were the fighting crew (like the Vikings for example); which is somewhat logic, they were raiders and it was logic to maximize the fighting complement of each ship.

All in all, you'll get a very nice survey of 2500 years of sea warfare, with nautical evolution, main battles and a digression of tactics and ships from civilizations like the Egyptians, Sea Peoples, Minoan Crete, Syria and Greece.

The art of Giuseppe Rava, as usual, it's very good, being a valuable addition to the text. With battle scenes and comparatives between ships that provide a great visual reference to the reader. You will find the following plates: Egyptian war galley and Sea people ship - lateral comparison (based on the relief of Medinet Habu); Battle of the Delta (artistic representation); syrian ship and Minoan galley (lateral comparison); Evacuation from Tyre; Pentekonter and Hekatonter (lateral views); Homeric landing; Battle of Alalaia (the first reported ramming actions); Triakonter and Samaina (lateral views).

Highly recommended.

excellent reference book on The Crusades

When I saw the name of Mister Igor Dzis I knew that this book would be beautifully executed,this book is based in the Russian edition by the same name which gave us a nice look inside the weapons and costume of the crusader knight and thier infamous Saracens enemies which is the part that I really enjoy, there is not much books on the subject so enjoy the plates on the arms and armours of the Muslim and Saracens Knights(well remenber that David Nicolle's study on the Saracen Faris Ad 1050-1250 Warrior 10)
The Crusades is one of my favourite titles, the details of equipment is amazing, full color throughout all made by the same author, if Angus McBride is is one of the world's most respected historical illustrators, Mister Igor Dzis is the same for the Russians, if this is the first time you hear about him you would not be dissapointed this is one of his best historical artwork.
On the content of the book, this is a nice introduction to the eight famous Crusades, in every chapters you would find a small bio on the Leaders of each Crusade, also a nice chapter discution on the arms and armors, organization and tactics of both the Christian and ISLAMIC armies, some samll MAPS of battles and at the end some of photos of the figures of the publisher.
The books summarizes the Crusades but also provide modelers, historians, collectors, re-enactors and wargamers with an endless source of inspiration and information for their work or passion.

he has made some great books and articles on medieval and Islamic warfare only put his name on the search engine and you would fine titles from the islamic armies to the Russian Medieval Armies and Medieval Siege Weapons. Brassey's Book of the Crusades by David Miller also features maps and numerous color illustrations but I nice work on the Oriental Armour is the one by H. Russell Robinson, another Related Books is Indian and Oriental Armour by Lord Edgerton of Tatton, if you enjoy the illustration check the amazing work of Angus McBride
Warriors & Warlords, highly recommended.
Lets hope the near future we can see the hardcover edition of the Crusades.

"'The Crusades' in Brief"

"The Crusades" by Yli Remo Vallejo is an entertaining read that runs chronologically from the beginning of the 1st Crusade (1096 BCE) to the fall of Acre (1291 BCE). Sprinkled through out the book are appropriate bios of the leading characters on both sides of the Crusades. The artwork and maps lend, not only visual aid but, incredible spice to keep one flipping right on through. There are two appendices of sorts. The first is a brief overview of arms, armor and tactics of the combatants over the two centuries that hosted the Crusades. The second is another brief one containing images of Crusader miniatures from the St. Petersburg Collection, enjoyable for the soldier buff.
The only draw back, I feel, to this book is the lack of information on the rise of Islam. This lack of information allows the author to "color" his conclusion. And there are a few, hardly important, inaccuracies that only an avid historian would notice.
Overall this work with it's beautiful artwork and engrossing telling of the two hundred years of campaigning will keep you turning pages until you have hit the back cover.
